CityViewNC .com | 25 As Fayetteville's new plastic surgeon, Dr. Nordberg's schedule is likely to stay busy. He specializes in nearly the entire realm of plastic surgery, and his experience in breast reconstruction makes him an integral part of Cape Fear Valley Health's growing breast cancer treatment program. their children were born. His brother, Erik, is a retired Special Forces lieutenant colonel, once assigned to the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg. "I've always had a place in my heart for North Carolina," Nordberg said. "I always thought it would be a great place to go back and practice. Cape Fear Valley Health's needs were a lot of what I'd ideally want to be doing. "e breast program at Cape Fear Valley is kind of exploding," he said. "Breast reconstruction is something I've always liked doing. It's rewarding work. And it's incredibly daunting the sheer number of women who are affected by breast cancer." Nordberg points out that an astounding one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Sawyer has helped build the breast cancer treatment program at Cape Fear Valley Health so that it offers a team approach. "It's been a combination of Dr. Sawyer building the program and the hospital wanting to put the resources into building a modern breast program," Nordberg said. "A modern breast program brings all the specialists together – radiologist, oncologist, surgeon and plastic surgeon – and a good center will do this. All the specialists have their input at each patient's breast conference. Oen, by the time I see them, I've already heard all about them." Cape Fear Valley Health's program also features breast cancer navigators, who are there to help patients through the entire process. "ey really hold everybody together and become almost like family," Nordberg said. "e dedication is there through the medical center to make this process as comfortable as possible." A native of Pennsylvania, Nordberg graduated with honors from the Temple University School of Medicine in 1997. His mother Judy died unexpectedly while he was in medical school from an undiagnosed heart defect. "at made me angry," he said. "It drove me to read and learn all I could about human anatomy, and I just kind of fell in love with it." While breast reconstruction will be a prime focus, Nordberg will also head a comprehensive plastic surgery practice. Across from his office at Village Surgical Associates, he is setting up a medical spa that can offer everything from Botox and fillers to liposuction, tummy tucks, face lis and rhinoplasty. "I'll be able to do a faceli on one day of the week and then do some breast reconstruction surgery the next," he said. "And some nose surgery and a tummy tuck later in the week. at's what I love about it. at's the type of practice I want to have. I want to be able to provide people with excellent care and make them feel they don't have to travel."
