May 1, 2013 letters to the editor www.DesertMessenger.com TTERS editor LE o the t OPINIONS EXPRESSED IN LETTERS TO THE EDITOR DO NOT NECESSARILY REPRESENT THOSE OF THE DESERT MESSENGER. SEEKING HELP FROM RVERS Travelers on Hwy. 199, between Cave Junction, Oregon and the beautiful coast, know the long established jerky business located just feet from the California Check Station. "Smokey" Box Ulh, unexpectedly passed away on April 11th. Smokey was well known for his selection of Elk, Buffalo and Beef Jerky and was a welcome stop on the windy Redwood Highway. Smokey was only 47 years old and leaves behind his wife, Tonya and four children. The small community of Cave Junction, Oregon, is gathering funds to help with funeral expenses. A special account has been set up at Sterling Bank in Cave Junction. Any Sterling Bank can accept donations, or you can mail to "Smokey and Tonya Box Donation Fund", Sterling Bank, PO Box 781, Cave Junction, OR 97523. If you're travelling through the area, Taylor's Sausage and other local businesses have donation cans. Smokey had lived in the Illinois Valley since he was 14 years old and was well known for his jerky as folks travelled the windy highway from Grants Pass to the coastal redwoods. If you are in the area of the beautiful redwoods along the Smith River, please stop in for some delicious jerky. Any donations are appreciated. There's no transparency in Town Hall. No question Town Manager Laura Bruno, Council Members Orgeron and Crooks are trying to make life miserable for our Police Chief Jeff Gilbert, so he would quit. The amateur charges Orgeron accused Chief of at the last Council Meeting were petty, a complete waste of all of our time. His questions meant nothing. If Council fires Chief for cause, which there's none, they'd certainly lose in court along with damages, and with many to testify for Chief. Chief is steadfast and resilient and certainly is quite professional, something Interim Town Manager can badly learn from. Quartzsite's in dire financial problems further escalating by Bruno. It would be totally irresponsible for the council to fire Chief Gilbert as Town would have to pay his annual salary PLUS another salary Desert Messenger ONLINE MyQuartzsite.com WE ARE OPEN ALL SUMMER! Sandy, Debbie, and Cheyanne are happy to help with your Hair, Nails, Pedicure and Therapeutic Massage Services Corner of Moon Mt. & Cowell • Quartzsite • QUARTZSITE S ONLY YEAR ROUND SALON for a new Chief. Bruno has cleaned house changing employees (none with Quartzsite history), openly laughing at Open Meeting Law violations, and works in the most unprofessional, unknowledgeable way as does the Council. What is up with Interim Town Manager's husband? I was told he was allowed in Town Hall's offices, yelling and ordering around employees as well as allegedly threatening others. Don't Laura Bruno and her husband know how to behave? It's time for these two (and many of the Council members) to drop their arrogance and all of their personal agendas. About the new website: it is looking much better, but, when visitors or locals look for information (in and around Quartzsite), the vitality of the town (outside of its government) is most important. Most people want to know what is going on inside the Town, not in Town Hall. The promotion of this Town and its many facets is paramount, not politics. They've also been posting wonderful messages on their Facebook page. For great information and to learn what Quartzsite Fire is doing, visit www. Facebook.com/QuartzsiteFire. Here's a recent post: "We just had a neighbor walk into the fire station with a rattlesnake for us to relocate, so we thought an announcement is in order. "We have to ask you to avoid capturing poisonous rattlesnakes yourselves. Please give us a call and we'll use training, experience and appropriate equipment to capture the snake for you. We would much rather remove the rattlesnake than treat you for a venomous snake bite. Please, save yourself the medical bill and give us a call if you are faced with a rattlesnake that has gotten too close for comfort." Call: (928) 927-6556 or 911 in an emergency. RODNEY D.
