I'm talking about "stay at home," "shelter-in-place," and "social dis- tancing." Arizona, Oregon and all places in between are experiencing the same thing. Did you know that driving north on Interstate 5 one is welcomed by overhead, illuminated signs saying "STAY HOME." On a freeway yet, designed and built to encourage travel from there to here and back. And they're telling us to "stay home." Not very welcoming, if you ask me. Maybe we should ask: why do we need to travel? Why can't we just stay home? And someone is sure to immediately say: it's the weather. I've heard people ask whether we have weather. Well, of course, we have weather. Every place on the face of the earth has weather. What people mean by that question is do we have BAD weather? That natu- rally depends on the time of the year and often the time of day. And most defi nitely the place in ques- tion. South (Arizona for example) has HOT weather in the summer, glorious weather in the fall and spring and tolerable in the winter. Now if you compare Arizona's win- ter to the Northern winters, then Arizona's winters are pretty good. Oregon has delightful summers, pretty good falls and springs but watch out for those winters. Win- ters are WET. However, by com- parison, winter in Oregon is noth- ing like winter in Alaska. Another weird statement is: "you have an attitude." Yeah, everyone has an attitude, good, bad, or indif- ferent. What folks mean is that you have a BAD attitude. Again, com- pared to what or to whose? On one end of the scale are the Pollyannas and on the other end the Grumps. (Pollyanna, 1966 movie starring Haley Mills, you remember it?) Attitudes really get fi red up over quarantining restrictions. "How dare you tell me I can't go in there?" "Who says I have to wear a mask?" Really belligerent folks have even carried guns into government build- ings to defy restrictions. Fights have started, people have been hurt and property damaged. To what pur- pose? Waiting for take-out at a restau- rant, I met a young girl. From her dress I assumed she was homeless (turned out I was right) and her mannerisms were of the "high" va- riety (again compared to what?) She was eager to talk and her immedi- ate question was "How do you feel about losing your civil liberties?" I reeled back, gawked at her and asked the banal question, "What do you mean?" She gushed, "Why you can't go anywhere and don't you be- long to groups, clubs things like that taken away from you?" I gasped and said, "Those things are postponed. They haven't been taken away." She looked disappointed and trudged off with her dread- locked boyfriend, muttering," What a dope (slightly stronger language) she is." On a scale of one to ten, I'm prob- ably on the Pollyannaish side. I think things will improve. We won't collapse as a society. Eventually we'll return to some kind of "nor- mal." And, you know what? Worry- ing isn't going to affect it one teeny, tiny bit. "Que Sera, sera".
