Emergency Management Partners with Public Health to Fight COVID-19
Emergency Management's primary role is to prepare,
plan and execute operations to protect citizens and
minimize the impact of COVID-19, coordinating with
all internal and external partners to maintain information
flow, common operating procedures and preventative
actions. is includes managing resource requests to
the state made by hospitals, public health, county
departments and other organizations.
Emergency Services supports public health's role through
communication with and participation in conference
calls with the State Office of Emergency Management,
hospitals, public health, the military and the first
responder community. Multiple meetings are held daily
to provide resource navigation to help efficiently battle
the COVID-19 threat.
Emergency Services manages the county's 911 Emergency
Communications Center. e 911 operators are applying
the most accurate and updated COVID-19 processes to
keep the public and our responders as safe as possible. By
enhancing its call intake protocols, 911 serves as an early
detection center for potential COVID cases. is allows
responders a heads up to minimize potential responder
exposures as much as possible.

epartment of Social Services workers used their skills and teamwork
to improvise protective masks for approximately 250 essential staff
members including social workers, drivers, group home and domestic violence
and other employees required to be in contact with the public. Social Services
received 500 pairs of goggles, which are required personal protective equipment
(PPE), but not masks. Twenty DSS employees signed up to step in and make
the masks, sharing their skills and talent to help protect essential personnel
from COVID-19. As a reminder, the DSS building at 1225 Ramsey Street is
closed to the public, but citizens are still being served. Citizens may apply for
Supplemental Food and Nutrition Assistance (Food Stamps) and Medicaid
(adult and family) online. e most convenient method for applying for food
stamps and Medicaid is to go to https://epass.nc.gov/CitizenPortal/application.
do and use the online application tool called NC Electronic Pre-Assessment
Screening (ePASS).
