Citizens Academy Public Services Day Being Held on March 11 The next Fayetteville Citizens Academy class is being held on Wednesday, March 11, with a focus on several divisions of the City's Public Services Department, including Traffic Services, Street Maintenance, Stormwater and for the first time, Solid Waste. Academy participants will have an opportunity to engage in hands-on learning, view equipment, tour facilities and meet the personnel tasked with serving the community. Applicants must be City of Fayetteville residents, or work in Fayetteville city limits. The class size is limited to 25 residents. Class begins at 8:15 a.m. and will conclude at or before 5 p.m. To apply, log onto www.fayettevillenc.gov/citizensacademy, scroll to the bottom of the page, complete the fillable form online. You can also download and fill out the application, and email it to CorpComm@ci.fay.nc.us. Include "Citizens Academy Application" in the email subject line. The submission window for this session closes March 2, and applicants will be notified of their acceptance by close of business on Friday, March 6. "Our one-day Citizens Academy event gives residents an opportunity to see City of Fayetteville staff in their element, doing what they do every day to support and serve our citizens," said Corporate Communications Director Kevin V. Arata. Lunch will be provided and residents are asked to dress appropriately for the weather in comfortable, closed-toe footwear. Moderate walking and up to 30-minute periods of standing at some divisions should be expected, as participants will tour facilities normally not accessible to the public. Participants may also be filmed or photographed by City staff. The class will begin and end at the Grove Street Conference Room, located at 455 Grove St in the City building, adjacent to the Valero gas station. As a reminder, this Citizens Academy class is a one-day session that allows for more residents to attend the quarterly sessions. This format differs from the previous seven-week nightly Citizens Academy held in years past where residents attended all seven sessions. Human Relations Commission Annual Community Awards Reception The Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations Commission (FCHRC) will recognize recipients of its 2020 Community Awards for their excellent work and commitment to promoting positive human relations throughout the City and County. Award winners will be celebrated Thursday, February 27, 2020 at 6:00 pm at the Ramada Plaza, located at 1707-A Owen Drive, Fayetteville, NC. Tickets are available for $40 at the Human Relations Department, located at 225 Ray Ave, Ste. 100, Fayetteville, NC. No tickets will be sold at the door. Funds raised at the awards reception are used for the Commission's academic scholarships for Cumberland County high school students attending institutions of higher education. Community Award Winners are: • Chief Freddy Johnson, Patriot Award. Chief Johnson is currently the President of the Cumberland County Fire Chiefs' Association, and his community engagement efforts ensure that fire prevention and safety is practiced by the 19 volunteer fire departments in this area. Chief Johnson is a retired U.S. Army Command Sergeant Major. • Melissa Chuy, Youth Award. Ms. Chuy is a 17-year-old student at Jack Britt High School. Ms. Chuy served as the Vice-Chairperson of the Hope Mills Mayor's Youth Leadership Committee and was appointed to represent fellow peers in the Cumberland County Superintendent's Student Voices Council. • Kevin Brooks, Humanitarian Award. In 2016, Mr. Brooks launched The Group Theory, Inc., a platform that promotes sustainable solutions with a keen focus on youth. • Sharon Moyer, Lifetime Achievement. In the early 2000's, Ms. Moyer, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, created a program that paired military spouses with a civilian mentor. She also started the Fayetteville Observer's 40 Under 40 program. • Jessie Garner, Individual Award. Under his direction, the Fayetteville Cumberland Reentry Council (FCRC) assisted 413 clients in 2019. These clients represent persons who have criminal pasts and have recently been released from incarceration. • Piedmont Natural Gas, Fayetteville, Industry/Business Award. For more than 60 years, PNG has served this community through charitable giving and providing employees opportunities to volunteer their time to assist local nonprofit organizations. • Shannon Ward, Educator Award. Ms. Ward leads volunteer efforts in support of undocumented Americans and their families. • United States Army Special Operations Command Equal Opportunity Office, Military Award. In 2019, USASOC saw an increase in women graduating from Ranger School, and the first group of women accepted into the Special Forces Qualification course, also known as the "Q" course. • Teresa McAllister, Religious Award. Dr. McAllister launched Rapha Ministries Family Center based on a platform of her ministry motto, "You Matter." • Danielle Fennern, Organization Award for her work and dedication in establishing Fayetteville PRIDE.
