WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM DECEMBER 11-17, 2019 UCW 31 T he late Emmett Wayne Beard Sr. was inducted into the Cumberland County Agricultural Hall of Fame Nov. 22 during the annual Farm City Week program held by the Cumberland County Cooperative Extension and the Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville. Beard passed away in 2017 at the age of 70. An official portrait of Beard was unveiled and will hang on the wall with those of past inductees in the I.B. Julian Auditorium of the Cooperative Extension office at the Charlie Rose Agri-Expo Center, located at 301 E. Mountain Dr. Wayne Beard was a farmer, teacher and civic leader. He served as the agricultural representative on the Cumberland County Civic Center Commission, as an officer of the Cumberland County Livestock Association and on the Cumberland County Farm Advisory Board. A 1968 graduate of Methodist University, Beard taught vocational courses, including agriculture education, in the Cumberland County Public School System for 30 years. He taught at Armstrong Junior High School and Mac Williams Middle School. Beard grew up working on his family's farm in the Eastover community, where they grew tobacco, corn, soybeans, small grains and raised cattle. He took over the farm at the age of 18, when his father died. Cumberland County Agricultural Hall of Fame A dam Horne was recognized as the 2019 Cumberland County Farm Bureau Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year at the annual Farm City Week program. Horne developed an interest in agriculture at an early age and began growing squash, collards and deer corn to earn extra money at the age of 14. Today, Horne is growing crops on land once farmed by his grandfather, Worth Collier, and his great- grandfather, Harvey Hubbard. He has expanded his operation by farming land that he rents in the area. Horne is a lieutenant with the Fayetteville Fire Department and was a volunteer firefighter with Bethany and Stedman fire departments. Horne is the son of Johnny and Ann Horne. Horne and his wife Felisha Cashwell Horne have three children.
