He died in 1963, before Dickson was born but his name remains familiar to many today because lock and dam No. 3 on the Cape Fear River is named for him. Huske, a businessman who organized the Cape Fear River Improvement Association, led the movement for the construction of the lock and dam in 1935. By then, he and Jean were well- established in the big brick house they'd built on a large piece of property three miles outside of Fayetteville. e city gradually crept out toward the property but remained pretty undeveloped in Dickson Schaefer's childhood. e neighborhood is now a high-end residential area that has long since become part of the city. e huge tract of land that Billy and Jean owned has been subdivided and developed and now includes the homes on Springbrooke Place among others. But the original house retains plenty of privacy. It now sits on a 1.4-acre island amid the newer homes. An unobtrusive long driveway is the only hint that it's there. Dickson's mother, Patricia, was born at the Parkview house, as was her next oldest sister, Rosalie. Both sisters remained in Fayetteville aer marrying and both visited their mother regularly, bringing their children with them. Dickson said he was probably at the house just about every day of his first 15 years. As a young boy, he spent lots of time playing outside with family and friends. And his grandmother's house was the center of family gatherings at Christmas and other holidays.
