T
he big white house is
full of memories.
For Emily
Schaefer, those
memories go back to
2012, when she and
her husband Dickson bought the house
on Parkview Avenue.
Dickson Schaefer's memories stretch
back much further. Growing up, he
was at the house just about every day
because his widowed grandmother
lived there. "It probably felt as much
like my real home as anywhere," he
said recently.
e house is likely his and Emily's
forever home now and they relish
building many more memories there in
the years to come.
Always gorgeous, the house is
particularly beautiful at Christmas.
Built in the late 1920s by Dickson's
maternal grandparents, it has high
ceilings, large rooms, several fireplaces,
a double staircase in the entrance
hall, arched doorways, fanlights and
graceful lines. All lend themselves to
elegant displays of holiday greenery,
Christmas trees and pops of bright red
in poinsettias, bright bows and sprays
of berries.
Four stockings hang from the
mantle of the fireplace in the living
room – one for each of their children,
who include a high school senior, two
seniors in college and their eldest
daughter, a nurse who is married.
Next year, they'll be on their own –
except for the cats and the dogs – in the
5,300-square-foot house.
"Great idea to buy a bigger house
when everybody's about to leave," joked
Dickson Schaefer, who's an orthopedic
surgeon.
Except it was a great idea, given the
history and memories and happiness
involved – both those in the distant
and near past and those yet to come.
