Candlelight Page 2 T his year, Beta Phi had the pleasure of honoring Grant Miller '86 as one of its PIKE Old Masters. "I feel blessed to have been asked, and I am excited for the opportunity to share with the brothers," he said. Grant has enjoyed a fulfilling career in both startup businesses and mature companies, attributing much of his success to his Pi Kappa Alpha experience. "Living with 100 guys in a house can be fun as well as challenging, and it sets you up well for a business environment where people have different views and motivations. The leadership opportunities are a great training ground for your future career." Grant came to Purdue as an out-of-state freshman and looked into fraternities to find a good network; he soon felt right at home with Beta Phi. "It had the right mix of grades, athletics, and, of course, good sorority connections!" Grant tried to fill a role in the Chapter House every semester, serving as internal IMC and recruitment chairman among others. His favorite memories include winning intramural athletic events, winning the Grand Prix ("Good driving, Doug Wright '86!"), and a group of 30 Beta Phi brothers on the front page of the Lafayette Journal and Courier; it was from the day Purdue basketball beat Iowa and Bobby Knight threw the chair. Grant's most recent position was as president and CEO of BlueCrest, a $450 million printing service company, which he recently sold to Private Equity. "Taking BlueCrest private was both a tremendous effort and a lot of fun. I often described myself as a fraternity recruitment chairman during the three-year effort. My goal was to convince everyone that we were the 'best house' to join—or in this case, right place for employees to work, best place for Private Equity to invest, and best company for our clients to do business with." Grant's been fortunate to stay in touch with brothers in related industries and enjoys reconnecting when the opportunity arises. "After 33 years, we are honestly just older versions of the same group we went to school with." Living in Connecticut, Grant's had fewer opportunities to connect with the Chapter, but with a Sigma Kappa daughter at Purdue, he tries to stop by for the occasional football weekend. "The Chapter House is really looking good with the recent upgrades!" His advice to the active Chapter: "As I'm sure everyone tells you, enjoy your time in the house and make the most of it; college is a great time in your life." Grant and his wife, Rhonda Lostutter Miller, an Alpha Chi Omega, began dating in college and have been married for 33 years. They have four children, all of whom have gone Greek after hearing their parents' many fun stories. Grant tries to do a Tough Mudder race at least once a year and has enjoyed both snow and water skiing for about 45 years. "On a nice day, you'll find me on my Harley exploring Connecticut." Grant can be reached at grant.miller99@gmail.com. Making the Most of Beta Phi PIKE Old Master Grant Miller '86 Thankful for Fraternity Experience I am pleased to report that the effort to collect old composite photographs has received great responses. We received 19 composites from 10 alumni. Many thanks to alumni from the '50s, '60s, and '70s for coming through on this project. Though this is a good start, we have more composites to receive before Beta Phi's 100th anniversary in 2022. Please check for any missing copies, especially those from the 1980s to the present.
