2 BETA MU LINK W ith every generation of brothers who pass through the halls of the Beta Mu Chapter House, one aspect remains a constant: the Chapter House is the heart of the brotherhood—the core keeping everyone connected. e Chapter House is an enormous deciding factor for freshmen contemplating where they see themselves for the next four years. For Steve Poe '77, the house itself was huge in helping him make his decision to join Beta eta Pi at Purdue. "When I moved in, it was a beautiful house and facility, and it was part of my decision to join," Steve shared. To Steve, the Chapter House was home to fine young men who would become Steve's best friends, a place to study and focus on academics, and a place to have fun and bond with his Beta Mu brothers. It was an integral part of his Beta eta Pi experience at Purdue. "Being a member of Beta Mu helped me get through school and, most importantly, it allowed me to establish relationships during my time there," he stated. "I wouldn't have the life I have today without Beta Mu." Gratitude for his life and the key part Beta Mu Chapter played in shaping him into the person he is today inspired Steve to pay it forward and support the Return to Dominance campaign. "When I moved into the house, alumni before me had paid it forward," Steve said. "It's time for our generation to pay it forward for the next generation." When the last capital campaign launched, the Chapter House was in dire need of a renovation. A renovation was necessary in helping Beta Mu Chapter make a strong, competitive comeback at Purdue. "It needed to be a place to move us into this time, where young men want to live," he stated. "A place for camaraderie, fun, and academics." On a personal level, Steve still enjoys the camaraderie that started during his time at Beta Mu Chapter. He is especially close with five of his brothers, and they make time to see each other as oen as possible. Professionally, Beta Mu helped Steve make many contacts, some of which turned into business partnerships. Today, Steve is a real estate developer and he sometimes partners with Bruce White '75 and Mike Wells '75 in various real estate projects. "It's great to have those kinds of relationships where there's all that trust and goodwill built up over the years," he said. "It makes business enjoyable." Steve and his wife, Merry-Kay, have four children, all of whom had the benefit of growing up and developing relationships with the children of Steve's Beta Mu brothers. In his spare time, Steve enjoys hiking, spending time with family, and traveling. Some of the favorite places Steve and Merry-Kay have traveled to are New Zealand, Australia, Alaska, Tuscany, and Brush Creek Ranch in Saratoga, Wyoming.
