Drainage Assistance Program Approved by Council The City of Fayetteville is pleased to announce that the Drainage Assistance Program is now available to assist homeowners who have drainage concerns on their property that extend beyond public streets. At the Sept. 23, 2019 City Council meeting, Council voted to approve the Drainage Assistance Program and set aside money budgeted specifically for this purpose, which allows the City to address drainage concerns that fall outside city rights-of-way. In the time since City Council passed this program, City staff have expedited a contract with a local engineering firm to evaluate over 200 properties for which their owners have requested assistance with possible drainage issues. The firm will begin to inspect those properties within the next several weeks. The Fayetteville City Council developed this program after seeing the need to address drainage concerns that affect homeowners on their private property. Several of these properties exist outside of the previous city limits, and were built to standards that are less than what Fayetteville requires for stormwater infrastructure. In the program's inaugural year, city council has set aside $1.8 million dollars to address these concerns. Homeowners with drainage concerns on their property are asked to contact the city's stormwater hotline at 910-433-1613 to apply for the Drainage Assistance Program. If a homeowner request is deemed eligible, it will be reviewed by our engineering division and its eligibility prioritized according to criteria based on severity of the drainage problem. Residents are encouraged to visit www.fayettevillenc.gov/dap to learn more about the program and its eligibility requirements. City, Sponsors, and Volunteers Partnered for KaBOOM! Blitz Build Fayetteville Cumberland Parks and Recreation, 200 volunteers from local nonprofits, several partnering agencies, and a national corporate sponsor joined KaBOOM! on Oct. 10 to transform an empty site into a kid-designed, state-of-the-art playground in just six hours. The playground is located at Smith Recreation Center, 1520 Slater Avenue. Thank you to everyone who participated in this great community project! Segra Stadium recognized "Ballpark of the Decade" Ballpark Digest has recognized Segra Stadium as the High-A Ballpark of the Decade (2010-2019). Segra Stadium was built by the City of Fayetteville to be the new home for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, a Class A Advanced MiLB affiliate of the Houston Astros. The Fayetteville Woodpeckers open the 2019 season in their new home in April and had a record setting season in the new ballpark. Consideration for the recognition was established by the following criteria: • The ballpark's design, combining both state-of-the-art with a positive gameday experience • The ballpark's behind the scenes functionality – player spaces, concessions, front office, etc. • The ballpark's impact on its community, both economic and social According to Ballpark Digest, "For a ballpark to truly succeed, there must be more than just an economic payoff. They need to also advance the art of lifting fan expectations, giving them a good reason to return for future games. At the end of the day, the best ballparks are today's public squares, providing a sense of community in an era where community seems to be in short supply." In referencing Segra Stadium, Ballpark Digest highlighted the stadium's ability to attract visitors from nearby Fort Bragg while simultaneously focusing on the advancement of Fayetteville's historic downtown. Segra Stadium is also available for private events such as company parties, meetings, weddings and more.
