WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM OCTOBER 16-22, 2019 UCW 27 WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication Unclear on the concept Lee Dong-Jin, the mayor of Jindo county in South Korea, wanted to make International Coastal Clean- up Day special for his community. So on Sept. 20, the day before the global event, he instructed crews to transport more than a ton of trash that had already been collected from coastlines and deposit it on a pristine beach in Jindo, accord- ing to Agence-France Press. "We brought in waste Styrofoam and other coastal trash gathered from nearby areas so the 600 participants could carry out clean-up activities," Lee said. He apologized for deceiv- ing the volunteers and assured resi- dents that there was no "secondary pollution." News that sounds like a joke The Hudson Regional Health Commission in New Jersey is inves- tigating a mystery odor, according to WABC. People in Jersey City and Bayonne complained about the smell on Sept. 24, and officials, fol- lowing the wind, searched in New- ark but couldn't identify the source of the odor, which some described as similar to rotting fish. "Being a peninsula, we have water on three sides and sometimes at low tide you can smell the bay," explained Edo- ardo Ferrante, coordinator at the Office of Emergency Management. "It was really nothing like that. It was a very nasty, almost like a foul meat type of smell." The HRHC is continuing to investigate the odor. Buh-bye! Michael and Georgina Parsons' 54 neighbors in Little Bay Islands, Newfoundland, are resettling on the mainland this fall as part of a program to centralize populations in growth areas. But not the Par- sons. In spite of the fact that the government will cease all services to the island on Dec. 31 — electric- ity, mail delivery, ferry and snow- plow — the Parsonses have de- cided to stay. "We're not nervous," Michael told CTV. "I don't know if that's because we're just plain crazy or whatnot." They are busy prepar- ing for life off the grid, purchasing a snowmobile and wood stove, and installing a solar panel system. "We're also learning to do without some fresh fruits and vegetables and go to more dry goods, bottled goods, powdered milk -- that sort of stuff," Georgina said. Question: How can "Yellow- stone" not get nominated for any Emmys? — Greg Matt Roush : Maybe next year, when "Game of Thrones" is no longer around, shows on small- er outlets like Paramount Net- work will get more of a chance. The stock answer is that, even with an Oscar-winning star like Kevin Costner as a beacon, there are just way too many shows competing for a small number of slots. Question: The series finale of "Suits" was one of the best series finale of any TV show ever! — Mike Matt Roush : Few things are more satisfying than for a long- running show to end on its own terms and fashion a finale that gives viewers what they want, with maybe a surprise or two. Bravo to "Suits" for going out on a high. To submit questions to T V Critic Matt Roush, go to: tvinsider. com. by Damian Holbrook Cheers to "The Masked Singer" for being in tune with what we sometimes need. With so many gritty dramas and negative real- life news cycles, it's nice to have a shiny, silly piece of musical brain candy like Fox's costumed karaoke show as an escape. Jeers to "Chicago Med" for misdiagnosing Connor Rhodes. Instead of writing off Colin Donnell's character, the NBC drama's writers should have examined why the doc fell for two mentally ill women — first, Robin (Mekia Cox) and then Ava (Norma Kuhling), the colleague who killed his dad and then herself.
