CUTTING EDGE ACADEMICS PREPARE STUDENTS FOR A 21ST CENTURY CAREER Academically speaking, in the first 100 years John Brown University (JBU) has experienced an extraordinary transformation. A learning institution that originally had an emphasis on specialized vocational training has gone on to be ranked in the top 50 Best Christian Colleges in America*. The university today offers 41 majors and 52 minors. Here is a breakdown of their top 5 undergraduate programs. ACADEMICS 1. Engineering Electrical engineers design, develop, and test electrical equipment, such as electric motors, radar and navigation systems, communications systems, or power generation equipment. At JBU, engineering education goes far beyond the fundamentals. Here, students are challenged to solve real-world problems with innovative solutions from their first semester. Become immersed in the full design process, starting with brainstorming ideas, refining design, fabrication and troubleshooting, final testing, and ultimately presenting a final product unique to them and their inventiveness. This type of creative design space is the environment in which engineers thrive. A degree in electrical engineering opens up opportunities in many different industries. Demand for electrical and computer engineers is high and generally remains stable, even in an unstable economy. Electrical and electronics engineers have a median salary of $99,070, while computer engineers have a median salary of $114,600. Engineering Alumni Profile ■ Sam Stewart '09 Sam Stewart is the senior electrical engineering manager for Walmart in Arkansas. He is a certified professional engineer, receiving his Arkansas State Board Licensure. 2. Nursing JBU offers a robust nursing department for students looking to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The $6 million Health Education Building built in 2016 includes simulation patient rooms, high-fidelity simulators, clinical teaching space, exam rooms and lab space. Students receive individualized instruction and mentoring from a top-notch faculty teaching a holistic Christian view. As part of a summer clinical course option, nursing students have the opportunity to work alongside Guatemalan native Dr. Layla Chanquin, seeing patients in her clinic as well as in local schools and homes. Students can help with patient care, medicine distribution, monitoring growth and health of Guatemalan students, and providing home care for people suffering from respiratory, gastrointestinal, or other health-related issues. This is just one of several partnership opportunities being developed for JBU nursing students to fulfill part of their required clinical hours. Nursing Alumni Profile ■ Kate Garrison '18 Garrison has spent the last 10 years in Thailand where her parents are missionaries. "It's important not only to be aware of the difficulties and hardships prevalent in our world but also to help change it. I am studying nursing at JBU to make positive change both in the states and overseas." 3. Family & Human Services The Family and Human Services program prepares students for careers in the many areas of social services: state organizations, schools, churches, non- profit organizations, and foster care and adoption agencies. The curriculum explores real issues and challenges that arise in human relationships and teaches students how to facilitate healing in people's lives. Special attention is given to social justice 10 John Brown University | 100 Years Jimmy Allen 816 S. Mt.
