Brummett was hurting but she was also smiling because she knew this hurt would go away as long as she was diligent about her physical therapy. Before surgery, she said, the knee she was born with hurt so badly she couldn't get out of bed. Brummett said she was delighted with the treatment she'd been getting at Cape Fear Valley. "I haven't had one bad person here," she said. Swilley said he also had a great experience at Cape Fear Valley – which wasn't a surprise to him aer the open- heart surgery he'd had at the hospital two years before. "One thing I noticed this time," he said: "Once they got me up to the room before surgery that morning, I saw it was full of people doing surgical stuff. Everyone in that room knew what their job was, they were all busy and they were doing it. But they must have asked me 20 times what my name was and why I was there. ey were double-checking and they were explaining things to make sure I knew what was going on. I was amazed." Swilley said the experience filled him with confidence and optimism. Even when he woke up in serious pain as a result of the surgery, that was no surprise; he'd known that would be the case and knew that, unlike his original knee, this one would start feeling better if he worked at it. Seven weeks aer surgery and aer determined therapy, Swilley was walking around.easily and predicting he'd be back playing golf and riding his motorcycle within a couple of weeks or so. For that, he credited his surgeon and Cape Fear Valley. "I was well cared for," he said. "I was impressed." PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE is common, but usually goes unrecognized.
