SHS Student Body President, Tatum Milts, had the honor of representing the 1A Conference at a convention in Indianapolis! Jadirin Perez went to HOBY this summer, a statewide leadership seminar. Her trip was sponsored by the local Lion's Club and Vi-Sa-Wen Women's Club. To round out a summer of traveling 11 students, sponsored by Salome VFW Post 3708 and the AZ Desert Riders, were able to attend a student coun- cil summer camp in Phoenix. With summer opportunities be- hind us, school started back up here at Salome High School on August 5th. The beginning of the school year is usually slow, but this year we started out with a bang in the form of four new teachers. Featuring Ms. Stacey, the new Business teacher, Mr. McCabe, the new English teach- er, Ms. Salazar, one half of the new math teacher duo, and Ms. Andres, the other half of said duo. When asked their opinion on this year's start and the some of the new teach- ers, student Megan Lopes recalled, "It was really nice being able to see friends again, and the new teachers I've met seem pretty cool!" On an- other note, the Freshmen class has a whopping 42 students, a new high in recent memory. With the start of a new school year comes the start of fall sports. The girl's volleyball team has their fi rst home game on September 5th against Tonopah Valley High School. They have three more home games this September: the 6th against William High School, the 16th against San Pasqual High School, and the 20th against Mayer High School. The girl's volleyball team started practicing three weeks before their fi rst game. When asked about the upcoming season, Coach Avila said she thought it would go really well because they have a lot of returning seniors and some really strong underclassmen. She went on to add, "It's really hard to get every- body on the court at once that needs to be there. We only have six posi- tions and we probably have ten girls who could be starters." It wouldn't be fall sports without a fresh football season. The Salome football team had their fi rst game on Friday, August 23 against Mo- have ALC and won with a score of 72-0. The Salome Frogs only have three home games left this season: on September 6th against Williams, September 20th against Mayer, and on October 18th against Anthem Prep. We caught up with the head football coach, Mr. McCarty. When asked what lessons he learned from the game, Coach McCarty said that they learned the things they need to clean up before they play more elite teams and that they have to focus more during practice. When asked how he thinks the rest of the football season will go, he said that it will all depend on how hard they decide to work during the game and practice. RVs…Yeah, Quartzsite has some. Then comes January and February and Quartzsite sprouts RVs on every open spot. Millions of them. Most folks in Quartzsite have RVed, some still RV. Let's take a few minutes and remember "the good ole' days." Going back as far as the 1990s RVers big problem was remain- ing in touch with loved ones left at "home." No cell phones and no internet. Wow! How did we exist? Remem- ber those long lines at pay phones in the campgrounds and parks? I remember one Christmas standing out- side with about 50 people in line waiting for their turn on the phone. My little granddaughter had to sing all the verses of "Mary Had A Little Lamb" to me. I didn't know there were that many verses! I simply held out the phone and let all the folks enjoy a concert, slightly off key, but sung with a great deal of verve and vigor. And if you couldn't keep in touch by phone, how about mail? Aw, yes, we had mail forwarding companies; government agencies sniffed and called them "mail-drops" (said with scorn!) You could have your mail forward- ed if you knew where you would be and when. Small town post offi ces USUALLY accepted General Delivery mail without complaint. A wee little post offi ce in Alaska insisted we had to fi ll out a change of address form even though we told her it was a one-time deal. And then there was the time the zip code was wrong on a package meant for us. I could see the package in the offi ce but "the zip code is what we go by. That package will have to go to the zip code that's on it. And then you can go there and pick it up!" Only 50 miles out of our way; it could have been worse. Some folks used reservation companies to smooth the way. At least we did until ours was wiped out in a hurricane on the Gulf Coast and that was the end of that. That was when my husband prevailed: no more reserva- tions, we just go! And so we did for 15 years. Most RVers have spent a night in parking lots or Rest Areas. We decided Rest Areas weren't too safe but we used truck stops and Wal-Marts. Truck stops were great; we felt very secure tucked in among those big 18 wheel- ers. There was the time a cattle truck parked beside us and all night long we were serenaded with Mooo, MOOO, moooooo. Talk to a few RVers, they can tell you stories all night long. Most of us miss the traveling and mourn the loss of true independence, but many of us have become "Snow Birds." We spend about six months in Quartzsite and six months "up North." Sometimes going in RVs and sometimes "mo- teling it." Any way that gets me back down to Quartzsite is fi ne. I love the little ole place and I'll soon be back down for the winter. I can hardly wait.
