I have been told I cry for those who can't. So it's been a very tearful week for me and others with news of another and another mass shooting. The Gilroy shooter said he was angry! Being angry is not a good enough ex- cuse to kill people! Now I'm angry, too, that Gilroy has become another city in the mass shooting statistics. This com- munity does not deserve it; nor does any community that is on "that list!" Some 4,000 volunteers work ex- tremely hard to put on the annual Garlic Festival which, as the mayor said, is like their annual family re- union. Just last year, the festival raised $255,000 which was distrib- uted to 170 charities. Since 1979, the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association has donated more than $11.5 million back to the local community. I am so very grateful to have volunteered for the festival in the early 80's at Christ- mas Hill Park, which is a beautiful community park, designed around the natural beauty of the land. I have wonderful memories of grow- ing up in Gilroy, moving at the age of 12. Junior High, High School, Col- lege, raising kids - all in Gilroy. Heck, my fi rst protest was riding bi- cycles with friends before the ribbon cutting of the new Santa Teresa Road (the back road to Garlic Festival and Gavilan College) because offi cials did not include a bike lane. My kids grew up in the downtown area. I owned a retail store downtown and worked at other jobs downtown. For years, I walked to work and even at night I had no fear of being harmed. The building where my business was located is long gone, but the memo- ries are still strong in my heart. Too many people have died...for no other reason than someone is an- gry- angry at some infamous "them." There is a strong relationship be- tween anger and fear. Most animals respond to threat by either fi ghting or fl eeing. But we're smarter than animals, right? We have choices ev- ery moment. Every social media post against "them" is encouraging oth- ers to be angry, and it feeds our own fears. Let's start encouraging oth- ers to be more peaceful and loving to each other. We were taught these things in kindergarten.Look for the Dove in this edition. After all, "We are all connected in the great Circle of Life. —Mufasa I offer you peace I offer you love I offer you friendship I see your beauty I hear your need I feel your feelings My wisdom flows from the high- est source I salute that source in you Let us work together For unity and peace. - GANDHI'S PRAYER FOR PEACE
