10 www.DesertMessenger.com July 10, 2019 Salvation Army plans vacation By Jackie Deal We're calling it a rally. Usually "rally" means a group of RV- ers have driven a ways and gathered at a campsite to explore, eat, gab, eat, gossip, eat and, you know, generally have a good time. (Did I mention "eat"?) This rally is different only in that we didn't have to travel anywhere; it's being held in our home park. The idea is to give park members who no longer can travel the feeling that they're at a rally just like the good ole times. There's been plenty to do and even more to eat. We explored places I've never been to even though I've lived here for eleven years. We started with the more mundane. A visit to our local Visitor Center. Hey, they have things you can't fi nd elsewhere. Do you know (so it was said) that you can't get a free California map in the California Visitor Centers? But you can get one here in Sutherlin Oregon! Then a visit to our local library. Several years ago the voters defunded the library and it nearly closed. A band of dedicated volunteers kept in running and now it has a part-time paid administrator with a crew of volunteers running it. And what prog- ress they've made. Computerized check-outs. Computer lab. Research lab. Children's programs. And a grant to take books out to preschools and re- tirement centers every month. Wow! The highlight was a trip to a local chainsaw wood carver. It was an eye popping experience. Marvelous, full sized animals and even Superman. Bears, elephants, any animal real or imagined seems to spring forth from the rough logs under the master carver's touch. His shop was open and he showed us his various sized chainsaws. The fi gures weren't just lined up for inspection. They were scattered around a park like setting with huge trees, shrubs, fl owers and pathways. Folks strolled around calling, "Hey,come look at this!" Every step seemed to reveal new delights. The carver's wife took us into their home and showed us her small fi gu- rines. Flowers so delicate you couldn't feel them in the palm of your hand. A multitude of various birds with feathers and dainty legs. Cabinets full of wood carvings. And carvings scattered throughout her home. A trip to a local reservoir for catered sandwiches. Aw, what could be bet- ter? Sun and a gentle breeze, grassy slopes, laughing people fi lling their stomachs! It was an exhausting day but so rewarding. The motto of the rally was "Stepping Up and Stepping Out". And it really was an opportu- nity to step out into places unexplored and meet new and wonderful people and experiences. Are you afraid to "step out"? What are you waiting for? There'll never be a better time. Life is for living; not for waiting to die. Travelogue 2019 Ladies meet for Lunch monthly Two years ago, a group of ladies getting together to "do lunch" sounded like a great idea to or- ganizer Lynda Goldberg and her friends.
