JUNE 12-18, 2019 UCW 27 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication Holy action hero! Bill Gibson of Burtonsville, Maryland, drives an iconic vehicle: a custom-built 1966 replica of the Batmobile, complete with rocket launchers, jet flames and a bat phone, worth $175,000. So he wasn't about to stand by and let a criminal escape on May 15, when a hit-and-run driver smashed into his prized car on Route 28 in Silver Spring. "I don't know what the guy was thinking," Gibson told Fox5. "He must have been going about 60 ... and just slammed into the right rear corner." When the driver failed to pull over, Gibson dialed 911 and gave chase, eventually pulling into a church parking lot, where the driver agreed to give Gibson his insurance information without getting the police involved. Gib- son estimates repairs will cost around $7,000. [Fox5, 5/21/2019] Lame Manuel Muniz, 35, of Amsterdam, New York, didn't fool officers of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Depart- ment with his attempt to avoid the lines at the DMV. Muniz was charged on May 20 with driving an unregistered vehicle after officers quickly identified Muniz's handwritten inspection sticker as a fake, made out of red construc- tion paper and including a handmade bar code and January 2020 expiration date, WRGB reported. "We appreciate people who take some initiative," the department posted on its Facebook page, "however this will not work as your vehicle inspection sticker, NICE TRY!" [WRGB, 5/22/2019] Fashion statement You either love 'em or hate 'em, but if you're going to be mocked for your fashion sense, Crocs' newest style doubles your chances. Developed as part of a collaboration with Japanese streetwear company Beams, the new Crocs sport tiny fanny packs attached to the ankle straps, reported CBS News. The $53 shoes come in teal and purple, and the miniature backpacks are big enough for keys, a credit card and a few dollars — along with what's left of your dignity. [CBS News, 4/30/2019] Or you could just walk Officials in the southern Spanish town of Estepona were forced to close a 125-foot steel slide linking two streets to save folks from a 10-minute walk when people suffered injuries riding down it, Sky News reported on May 13. One woman posted photos of her bruised and scraped elbows, saying her rear end suffered worse. The town council argued that it provides instructions about how to safely use the slide, but closed the conveyance for fresh safety inspections. Local residents said the 28,000-euro slide was a "vanity project" for the may- or. [Sky News, 5/13/2019] A R IES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Star t sor t ing t hrough t hings, A ries. Question: Why is Sela Ward leaving "FBI" after just one season? She was perfect for the role and has a strong fol- lowing on TV. — J Long Matt Roush: It was reported that Sela Ward had signed just a one-year deal with the series, so this wasn't entirely unexpected. Some actors — see Con- nie Britton, who similarly left "9-1-1" after just one season — opt not to be tied down indefinitely to a show, and these are personal choices. I'm only speculat- ing here, because I'm not aware of any exit interviews or the like, but knowing that Ward spent time in the trenches of "CSI: NY," I imagine that while she was grateful for the "FBI" gig, being part of a procedural ensemble may not always be the most rewarding job for an actor. She did class up the joint, though, so I hope we'll see her on TV again soon. Question: Who thought it was a good idea to make Watson a blonde in "Elementary"? — Gordon Matt Roush: By all accounts, that was Lucy Liu's call. And while it's maybe surprising, it's undeniably striking. e change of hair color is referenced in the season opener, suggesting that it's a reac- tion to Watson wanting to mix things up now that she's adjusting to life in London. It's not like this could do any damage to the show, which knew going in that this would be the final season. Enjoy while you can. CBS's macho hit recently explored some emotional armor as Hondo (Sh- emar Moore) tried to save a kid from his own gang past, Luca (Kenny Johnson) revealed a teacher's life-altering influence and Deacon (Jay Harrington) used a tragic truth to steady a suicidal shooter. Now that's true heroics. Jeers to "Empire" for poaching the wrong Lyon. For months, we wondered who was in the coffin in all those flash- forward scenes on the Fox drama. Surely it had to be the dying Andre (Trai Byers) or the absent Jamal (Jussie Smollett), right? Nope, it was Lucious's recently revealed bastard son Jeff Kingsley (A.Z. Kelsey), who offed himself before fans could even care. M A G A Z I N E Inspire. Educate. Empower. Celebrate. facebook.com/pg/WomensViewMagazine • 910-484-6200
