I never thought Paul Win- er's crossing would be the cover. What a diffi cult week it has been for many of us. I am so very grateful to Mark Goldberg for writing such an eloquent history of Paul, AKA Sweet Pie. My Facebook post about Paul's death has reached over 15,000 people. The orginal post about Paul's health issues had hundreds of comments with prayers and good wishes. I printed over 10 pages of the comments and gave them to his wife, Joanne. Paul called me from the hospital after reading your com- ments. He said he could not believe how many people actually took time to post their thoughts and prayers on Facebook. Joanne told me he cried tears of gratitude. I had saved the recording of his calls, but when my phone died, they ended up hiding in some fi le somewhere on the cloud. I am determined to fi nd them, tho! Paul has been submitting comics to Desert Messenger for the whole 15 years of its existence. I chose a camel cartoon from the past for this edition, as he loved to see people laugh. He sure did make me laugh alot, too! We all have our memories of peo- ple who have made an impact on our lives. I believe people come into our lives to teach us something. Paul helped many people see beyond the physical. Paul helped us laugh at ourselves. Paul taught us to give- he wanted to give back to the com- munity for the help he and Joanne received after the death of their child, Celia. Paul taught us to honor our past and live life to the fullest - he never gave up on his musical dreams. I remember how excited he was when he received the piano in the bookstore. He showed it off to everyone who visited. A few years back, I stopped in the store to pick up his comic for that week's paper. As I was leaving, a tour bus pulled into the lot. I was in a hur- ry, as usual, but decided to turn off the engine and follow the tour group into the bookstore. They all wanted a photo with Paul, which they did get, but only after he sang and played his boogie woogie blues for them. It was obvious Paul really made their day, and created wonderful memories which will last a lifetime. Paul taught me to enjoy each moment. And for that, I will be forever grateful. We will miss you, dear friend!
