In recognition of April, Fair Housing month, La Paz County in partnership with the Town of Quartzsite and Parker are sponsoring a coloring contest for all children from kin- dergarten to 5th grades, and an essay con- test for grades 6 thru 8 and grades 9th thru 12. There will be prizes awarded for First, Second and Third place in each group. The coloring contest and essay contests will be judged by an elected official (or their representative) from each govern- ing body and awarded at the Board of Su- pervisors meeting on Monday, May 20. The essay subject will be "Why is the Fair Housing Act still important to- day?" The essay must at least 500 words and cannot exceed 1000. All essays and coloring pictures must be submitted to the La Paz County Board of Supervisor's office, located at 1108 Joshua Ave, Parker AZ, no later than May 6, 2019 to be eligible for judging. The coloring pictures are available at your school and we will also have them available at Town Hall. Each year the Town of Quartzsite slurry seals the pavement of several Town streets. The streets to be slurry sealed are selected based on the con- dition of the pavement identified by the Town's Public Works Department and are grouped into neighborhoods for efficient application. Slurry seal is a preventive maintenance which involves applying an emul- sified asphalt mixture spread over the existing street surface. It helps pro- tect streets from water penetration, provides a new surface with improved skid-resistance, and extends the life of the roadway. Slurry seal is part of the Town's ongoing pavement maintenance program to help seal cracks and preserve the pavement of our streets. You might ask, "Why does a street with a fairly intact surface get slurry sealed instead of a street in a more deteriorated condition?" Slurry seal is a surface treatment that is meant to extend the life of pavement and needs to be applied to a street before it begins to fail with potholes and broken surfaces. Slurry seal is a cost effective way to keep a good street in good shape for a longer period of time. Streets that are in a more deteriorated condition are treated with an asphalt overlay or are reconstructed. If there is a cone in your driveway, it means the paving process has begun. It is vital for everyone's safety that you do not drive, walk (including your pets) or bicycle on the wet slurry. Please stay off the street until it has been determined by Town personnel that the streets are safe to drive on and have opened the streets to traffic. Remember that during the application process, the street is closed and there will be Town and contractor per- sonnel working in the street any unexpected traffic is very dangerous and puts their safety at risk. In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, the above schedule may change. Road closures for pavement preservation: April 17: W. Camel St., Pyramid Ln., Camel Ln., Saguaro Ln.
