Page 28 February 20, 2013 16th Quartzsite Masters draws large crowd By Linda Taylor Quartzsite, Arizona - Nearly 100 golfers gathered February 16, at the Quartzsite Golf Course to compete in three age categories for both men and women. The tournament is put on by local VFW Post 769. According to tournament director, Dennis Dole, this year���s tournament will bene���t the community of Quartzsite with over $3,500. To date, the tournament has raised over $67,000 which bene���ts local scholarships, local youth programs, and national military services of the VFW programs. Each participant received a T-shirt with a special ���Sweet 16��� design that was created by Frank Edwards, the Men���s Auxiliary president. Dennis Dole helps Jerry Taylor winner of the Men���s Master Jacket Participants were also treated to a delicious lunch of roast beef sandwiches, baked beans, cole slaw and choice of beverage. In addition, numerous businesses and individuals donated prizes for a drawing which was held prior to the announcement of this year���s winners. The winner of the green Master���s jacket for the women was Val Norell who shot a 47. She won in a sudden death playoff with runner up, Debra Jensen who also shot a 47. The men���s Master���s jacket was won by Jerry Taylor who ���red a round of 36. The QIA presents ������������������ | B������ K������ In the A group for women, LeeRaye Christner won 1st place, Darlene Aitken won 2nd, and Linda Taylor won 3rd. In the B group for women, Sue Harrold won 1st place, Connie Michel won 2nd, and Jayne Coleman won 3rd. In the C group for women, Debra Jensen won 1st place, Bobbie Harr won 2nd, and Annette Silverthorn won 3rd. In the A group for men, Robert Webb won 1st place, Russ Leininger, Robert Dickson, and Gary McGowan tied for 2nd. In the B group for men, Grant Berube won 1st place, Mike Duchstener and Bud Key tied for 2nd. In the C group for men, Carl Wynne won 1st place, Jim LaCroix won 2nd place, and Jim Laeng won 3rd. A big thank you to Steve, who cooked the BBQ roast; Bad Boys Caf�� who provided the baked beans; Kirshana Guy, Tamara Ragsdale (VFW Ladies Aux. President), Jean Braa, and Donna Dole who served the large crowd.
