BETA BEAT Sigma Alpha Epsilon s University of montana Spring 2019 THE In this issue: Bill Goesling '63 - p.2 Jon Krutar '66 - p.3 Chapter Report - p.3 A s I write this, Montana is suffering from record-low temperatures and record snowfall. I recently went from rainy California to Missoula for a Founders' Day celebration, which included a ritual ceremony for new members and Montana Beta's latest adult member initia- tion. We inducted our chef and house direc- tor, Bill Buseman, who is a man of many hats. I welcome him to the brotherhood. During the last few months, we have lost several brothers from my time at 1120 Gerald, including Marty Mikelsons '64 and twins Doug Baldwin '61 and Wayne Baldwin '62. Doug was EA when I pledged SAE. All these gentlemen had the qualities that drew me to SAE. They were humble, kind, talented in many ways, and just plain true gentlemen. As I grow older, the inevi- table is occurring and I cherish those friend- ships more and more. We have received a report of a pledge to the UM Foundation in the amount of $50,000 to endow a future scholarship for a member of Montana Beta. This is one of several such gifts that have been pledged by our alumni to benefit Montana Beta. A long-running scholarship through the UM Foundation endowed by D.J. Schultz '62 has provided scholarships for many years. These not only help deserving students but are a tool in our recruitment efforts. I would like to encour- age more brothers to consider this way to "pay it forward." If you have any questions about how to set this in motion, please con- tact me. It was the 163rd anniversary of the founding of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Alabama. Alumni were invited to attend the event, which in- cluded two special ceremonies. Longtime Chapter Advisor John Green- er '79 was awarded the Alumni Fidelity Plaque for all he has done and does for Montana Beta over the last 16 years. John has gone above and beyond to make sure Montana Beta survives and flourishes. The plaque he received reads, "Montana Beta gratefully recognizes steadfast devotion to the high ideals of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and their home at the University of Mon- tana. In honor of John Ralph Greener." The Alumni Fidelity award was first awarded to Brother Ron Cole '81, and it is the highest individual award Montana Beta alumni can receive. Congratulations to John, and many thanks for your service! Another special Founders' Day moment occurred during a ritual ceremony, in which our esteemed house director and chef, Bill Buseman, became Brother Bill. He joined the chapter as a member and was welcomed by us all. Bill is a fine addition to our rolls. A catered dinner at 1120 Gerald followed. We hope we have reestablished a Founders' Day tradition and get a large alumni group next year. SAE REMEMBERS LATE ALUMNI John Greener '79, left, holds the Ron Cole Alumni Fidelity Award with House Corporation President Jim Mountain '81. Brothers celebrate the initiation of Bill Buseman on Founders' Day.
