Off Highway Vehicle use
on the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Grounds
On February 15 the Arizona Sunriders Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) Club
in Quartzsite had a guest speaker Sgt. David Nieto Jr., Conservation
Offi cer, Directorate of Operations
from the U.S. Army Yuma Proving
Ground (YPG.) Sgt. Nieto is the Enforcement Offi cer for YPG responsible
for insuring that unauthorized people and vehicles do not travel off the
authorized routes.
He stated that due to the dangers of unexploded ordnance it is extremely
dangerous to travel any routes that have not been cleared. They are also
experiencing vandalism of historic sites. Sgt. Nieto provided copies of
a map of the YPG designating the routes that are open for the public to
travel and these areas are well signed. Basically, the public is only al-
lowed to travel on the county roads and the Arizona Peace Trail within
YPG. Unauthorized travel on other mining roads and trails has become
so prevalent that regular enforcement has become necessary.
Sgt. Nieto
will be patrolling the area and citations will be issued to violators.
Arizona SunRiders OHV Club is organized to help keep our trails open, to
sponsor rides, to work with the community to foster good relationships
and enjoy riding. Learn more arizonasunriders.ridetrails.org.
The Arizona Peace Trail (AZPT) is a 650+ mile Off-highway Vehicle loop
trail and trail system located in the western side of Arizona. The AZPT
offers recreation opportunities for all types of Off-highway vehicles. To

According to DVIDS, Technical Director Lazaro "Larry" Bracamonte stat-
ed, "Safety is a culture at YPG," he said. "Our motto is that everyone goes
home at the end of the day, and we live by that. We work in an inherently
dangerous environment, whether it is fi ring a projectile, preparing am-
munition, or cleaning up a range: even in the commute to work every day
it is important to emphasize safety."
YPG is a United States Army proving ground and one of the largest mili-
tary installations in the world. It is a subordinate command of the Army
Test and Evaluation Command.
