AACREDITUNION.ORG | 7 Be aware: Deepfakes Remember the movie Forrest Gump, where the title character meets three presidents? It took a skilled visual eff ects team to create those scenes, but almost anyone could do it today, thanks to advances in artifi cial intelligence. "Deepfakes" fi rst emerged in late 2017 on the social news website Reddit. The fake visuals combine images and videos in a way that's highly realistic, making it look as if someone has said or done something they never did. If you watch closely, the face mapping usually isn't perfect and you can spot the subterfuge. So if you are questioning whether your favorite celebrity really said that or if your local politician behaved uncharacteristically, some additional research could prove that you were just tricked by a Deepfake.
