F or some people, summer can be the most relaxing part of the year. But for others, this is the busiest time — especially for the Fraternity Housing Corporation (FHC)! e summer is the best time for FHC to do facility updates and projects so that they are complete when collegians return in the fall. With facilities empty for the summer, these three short months are jam-packed with projects ranging from cleaning and routine maintenance to full remodels and updates. Many of these projects are planned years in advance and include budgeting, determining a timeline, interviewing vendors, sketching plans, picking paint and fabrics and then monitoring the process all throughout summer. Knowing all this, when Pi Phis return to their facilities in the fall and don't see any major cosmetic upgrades, they can now think to themselves, "Well, I wonder what mechanical updates were made so we can all have a comfortable, safe and secure living environment for the coming year?" Each chapter's FHC is hard at work year-round to ensure a positive living environment for our collegians to experience, our alumnae to enjoy visiting and for future members to look forward to! P A G E 3 Illinois Zeta's bathroom renovation — look at it now! ousands Raised for St. John's Children's Hospital Pi Phis Continue to Lead the Way in Fundraising O ne organization many Pi Phis are involved in at the University of Illinois is Illinion. Illinion is Illinois' branch of a nationwide fundraiser for families that have children at a Children's Miracle Network Hospital. Funds go toward renovations, medical equipment and more for St. John's Children's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois, which is the Children's Miracle Network Hospital closest to the university. In the spring, a 12-hour dance marathon is hosted by the school during which the Miracle Children can meet the students who care enough about them to raise as much money as they do. In 2016, Pi Phi was the highest-performing fundraising team in the organization. MacKenzie Stanton '16 raised the greatest amount of money at more than $1,800. In 2017, 52 Pi Phis were on the team and raised a total of $16,898. Another member, Jackie Pulak '15, won an outstanding leadership award for her substantial role in the fundraising effort. en, in 2018, 54 Pi Beta Phis raised $11,059. is year, 43 Pi Phis have signed up to participate, and the number is expected to keep increasing until the dance marathon event in the spring. is past Halloween night, several Illinion participants engaged in Trick or Treat for the Kids (TOTFTK), an annual event that involves going door to door in the community asking for donations to support Children's Miracle Network. TOTFTK raised a record of $6,370, thanks to the leadership of senior and special events director Allie Howard '16 who organized the effort. Yet another way our chapter has supported cancer research is through participation in the Illini 4000. Participants bike 4,000 miles from New York City to San Francisco over the course of 76 days, with the goal to raise money and increase awareness for cancer research. Maggie Piazzi '16, represented our chapter by taking part in this journey last summer. Piazzi's perseverance and willingness to be a part of something bigger than herself reflect the general attitude that radiates throughout our members. With such spectacular accomplishments such as those mentioned, we hope Illinois Zetas will build this legacy by continuing their generosity in the years to come.
