M 19, 2010  LETTERS FROM PAGE 4 prompting the notification for our enforcement officers to stay out of Crawfords, unless invited. You didn’t. If you had, you would’ve discovered D M that there’s been a clear pattern of harassment towards the tenants of Crawfords by our police department, since I chose to run for a council seat. But you didn’t bother to ask any of our tenants. You would’ve found that enforcement has been coming through in the middle of the night, spotlights on, just “checking” to see that we were secure. But, you didn’t bother to investigate! You would’ve also found that not Willpower Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) non-prof- it organization. We are just that, a not for profit organization. I, or any other volunteer do not receive any compen- sation from Willpower or the Town of Quartzsite for anything we do for the animals. Currently there is an agree- ment between Willpower In.c and the Town of Quartzsite for Willpower Inc. to provide animal shelter services to the community at no cost to the Town of Quartzsite. The current facility has been established through the generos- ity of the community. Bottom line, the three volunteers that until I, Russell Sias, chose to run for a council seat, they rarely if ever, had come through the park, even in the busy part of the season. And then, when they did, they did so with spotlights off, instead of on - and in the windows of our residents. But you didn’t do due diligence by bothering to ask me why I issued the no trespassing notice to our enforcement officers. How sad you would so obviously use your paper in an attempt to slant what is supposed to be a fair election process. [Editor’s note: Mr. Sias is referring to an official Press Release from the Quartzsite Police Department printed on page 6 of the May 5th issue of the Desert Messenger. Press Releases are regularly published as space allows.] Animal Shelter updates Why don’t we use the other facility? What other facility? If you remember Russell Sias, Manager Crawford’s Trailer Park man the facility work for nothing. To those who are concerned about the Paw Power Animal Shelter are welcomed to call the Chairman of Paw Power Animal Shelter. All comments and ideas will be taken into consideration toward the improvement and safety of the com- munity. Email: pawpower2010@gmail.com Patty Patton, Chairman, Paw Power Animal Shelter 928-916-0657 two years ago we were shut down and removed from the property by Mayor Bennett. The Town of Quartzsite does not run the animal shelter; Paw Power Animal Shelter is a subsidiary of Willpower Inc. Who is doing this? For the third time in two years, Huey Bryant has become aware of litters of kittens in Quartzsite dumpsters. Where the third dumpster was located, I don’t know, but the previous dumpsters were behind a grocery store. My first thought was, “How can people do this? What kind of people do that?” I thought, “Well, maybe this dumpster is where the mother cat decided to have her kit- tens…who really knows?” It could be the same mother cat, who desperately needs to be spayed. There simply are not enough good homes for all these kittens; and canine pets, too. The kit- tens should also be spayed or neutered. So if anyone has a female cat roaming in your area, please borrow the Police Department’s capturing cage, bringing them to Paw Power Animal Shelter. I believe the shelter has a capturing cage for stray cats or kittens and will show Pattie’s RV Park OPEN YEAR-ROUND ~ LARGE LOTS 455 E. The phone number for the shelter is 928-916-0657. Then the cats can be taken to a veterinarian to be spayed or neutered. Dr. Hadlock has even volunteered in the past to do the spaying/neutering for no charge, depending on the time of year. So again, I ask: Who is doing this dumping? Is it just one person, or are more people involved? I can remember when, a few years ago, approximately 7 or 8 kittens and mother were “dumped” onto the street where I live. I had just come out of my front door. The “dump- ers” realized I had seen them do their dastardly deed, so they backed their car to the corner from where it entered. I figured that the “backing up” was so that I couldn’t read their license plate. For his own nation to take notice, Ma- hatma Gandhi once said, “The moral progress of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” This is so true. concerned Quartzsite citizen al vendor I listened with great interest to a Council presentation proposing a third-party collection of sales taxes by a company called RDS (Revenue Discov- RDS will be bad for City Editor: As a resident of Quartzsite and season- P 5 ery Systems). While the idea of faster tax collection for the City may help sta- bilize the revenue stream, the proposal would actually penalize all Quartzsite businesses and thousands of vendors. Business license holders would be re- quired to file and pay two separate sales tax reports monthly or quarterly. One to RDS and one to the State of Arizo- na; each using different forms! This is double work. Other troubling issues for this pro- Joanne Robinson, posal: Why would the City pay a com- pany 1.3 percent of their revenue for this collection service, while the AZ Dept of Revenue does this free? While the Council said they didn’t necessarily feel the City was being cheated by busi- ness owners and seasonal vendors, the underling tone of this proposal is more aggressive auditing and collection of sales taxes. This is where RDS would really make their money, collecting a fee of 30 to 50 percent of money they find in what they call “Discovery/Re- covery” auditing methods. If this isn’t anti-business I don’t know what is. I urge the Council to reject this proposal and find other ways to improve the rev- enue stream by effective cost cutting methods.
