The Quartzsite Police Department (QPD) over the years has been awarded several grants from Director Alberto Gutier of the Arizona Governor's Offi ce of Highway Safety (GOHS). These grant funds assist the Quartzsite Police Department in increasing its ability to detect impaired drivers, conduct traffi c enforcement, purchase equipment and vehicles, which otherwise would have been unattainable. The Quartzsite Police Department presented Alberto Gutier with an award for our appreciation. Chief William Ponce and Offi cer Hilario Tanakeyowma were there to present the award. Thank you, Director Alberto Gutier and Staff! This year Arizona Governor's Offi ce of Highway Safety awarded the Quartzsite Police Department a total of $32,706 to cover employee related overtime for Highway Safety, Impaired Driver Enforcement and to purchase an update radar trailer. This equipment will help track the amount of traffi c and the average speed of drivers on the roadways while displaying the drivers speed, and aid in traf- fi c control during collisions and special events. The grant funds are refl ective of the Quartzsite Police Department's commitment to improving roadway safety within the community. The Quartzsite Police Department en- courages everyone in the commu- nity to do their part in making our roadways safe by diligently obeying traffi c laws and driving safely. "Our Community…Our Commit- ment" continues to stand true for our Department and will be dedicating additional personnel to QPD presents award to GOHS Director Alberto Guier enhance efforts to remove impaired drivers from our streets during the 2018 Holiday Season. Remember, Drive Hammered, Get Nailed! As part of Arizona GOHS / La Paz County DUI Taskforce, depart- ments across the state will increase their patrols on streets and high- ways. QPD wants everyone to plan ahead this and designate a sober driver. "Get a DD NOT a DUI!" If you plan on drinking at all, don't plan on driving. The Quartzsite Police Department wants all drivers to please remem- ber these tips from the National Highway Traffi c Safety Administra- tion (NHTSA) to avoid a DUI and keep our roads safe: • Even one drink can impair your judgment and reaction time. • If you will be drinking, do not plan on driving. Plan ahead: desig- nate a sober driver before the party begins. Or leave your keys at home or give them to someone else. • If you have been drinking, do not drive-even a short distance. Call for a ride, sober friend or family mem- ber or use public transportation. Remember it is never ok to drive after drinking; Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving.
