January 2, 2019 www.DesertMessenger.com 3 Quartzsite Museum updates New Christy Minstrels return Sat. Jan. 12th 2pm & 7pm Corner of Moon Mt. & Cowell • Quartzsite • 928-927-5400 QUARTZSITE'S ONLY YEAR ROUND SALON - MON-FRI Cheyanne, Debbi, Sheryl, Gayle & Linda ARE HERE FOR YOUR OPEN YEAR ROUND! Hair, Nails, and Pedicure Services Our second speaker, Marshall Shore presented "Get your Arizona Kicks on Route 66 on December 20. The feedback we got was that he was a fun(ny) speaker and folks learned a lot about the "Mother Road". Our next speakers are Alison Moore and Phil Lancaster who will present "Rid- ers of the Orphan Train" on January 24 at 7 pm at the Community Center. Alison was here two years ago and presented to an overfl ow audience. They are back by popular demand. The presentation uses a variety of me- dia including pictures, responses received from actual orphans who were on the trains and their own song. The presentation is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Quartzsite Historical Society. Because our speakers have generated a large turn-out this year, we have moved to the Community Center. Be sure to note the change of location. Our December fi eld trip to the picture rocks was well attended. Our next fi eld trip will be on January 8 to the Cotton Gin and the Japanese Intern- ment Camp at Posten. For additional information contact the Quartzsite Historical Society or Lynn Stimson at 928-916-4562. January is shaping up to be a very busy month. We hope to have a bake sale after the Hi Jolly parade, please come and check us out at the park pavilion. We also hope to have a booth in the Big Tent. That booth would be manned by volunteers, so if you are interested in spending some time greeting and chatting with our visitors let us know at the museum. It is a lot of fun! We still have Volume One and Volume Two of "In the Shadow of the Saguaros" by Rosemary Wheeler available for purchase at the Museum. Please stop by to purchase these great books! Trivia Question: This week we are presenting a bit of trivia rather than asking a question. At the Route 66 presentation, among other things, we learned that the very popular song "White Christmas" was written at the Builtmore Hotel in Phoenix. Think about the words. It makes sense. Do you remember the Harvey Girls? What memories do you have of Route 66… which continues to exist in stretches across Arizona. We continue to need volunteers to assist with a variety of projects in- cluding exhibit cleaning and inventorying, computer input and general offi ce work, computer maintenance, special projects, docent assistance greeting the public and conducting tours, research of additional infor- mation regarding Quartzsite and general maintenance. Membership of $10 for a year is encouraged. As a member you will receive e-mail no- tices of coming events, have a vote in decisions being made regarding the Historical Society and Museum and participation in our fi eld trips is free. We are a non-profi t historical so- ciety. Visiting the Museum is free, although donations are always wel- come. The Museum is open Wednes- day through Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm. We are located at 161 Main Street (parking in rear). Phone (928)927- 5229. E-Mail QHS@TDS.net. We are continuing to recycle plas- tic, aluminum and glass, which can be dropped off any time at our front gate collection can. New volunteers welcome!! Folk Music Legends, the world-fa- mous group, The New Christy Min- strels®, is still under the direction of Randy Sparks, and the group is now BETTER than they were in their hey-day. The group, now of- fi cially seven members strong, is a mix of old and new. "For over fi fty years we have been the best talent show ever," says Sparks. " We still are." Don't miss any opportunity to see this stellar group in concert at the Quartzsite Improvement Assoc. (QIA) 235 E. Ironwood St. Tickets information at QIA offi ce M-F 9am-noon. 928- 927-6325.
