December 5, 2018 www.DesertMessenger.com 5 Southwest Indian Rock Art presentation Set in Stone but Not in Meaning: Southwestern Indian Rock Art "Set in Stone but Not in Meaning: Southwestern Indian Rock" pre- sentation will be given by archaeol- ogist Allen Dart at Quartzsite Pub- lic Library, 465 N. Plymouth Ave. Quartzsite, Dec. 6th 7pm This free presentation is presented by Quartzsite Historical Society and the Friends of the Quartzsite Li- brary, Co-sponsored by the Arizona Humanities Council. Ancient Indian pictographs (rock paintings) and petroglyphs (sym- bols carved or pecked on rocks) are claimed by some to be forms of writ- ing for which meanings are known. However, are such claims supported by archaeology or by Native Ameri- cans themselves? Archaeologist Al- len Dart illustrates southwestern petroglyphs and pictographs, and discusses how the same rock art sym- bols may be interpreted differently from popular, scientifi c, and modern Native American perspectives. Registered Professional Archaeolo- gist Allen Dart has worked in Ari- zona and New Mexico since 1975. He is a state cultural resource spe- cialist/archaeologist for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and volunteer director of Tucson's Old Pueblo Archaeol- ogy Center nonprofi t organization, which he founded in 1993 to provide educational and scientifi c programs in archaeology, history, and cul- tures. Al has received the Arizona Governor's Award in Public Archae- ology, the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society's Victor R. Stoner Award, and the Arizona Ar- chaeological Society's Professional Archaeologist of the Year Award for his efforts to bring archaeology and history to the public. Free to the public, Dec. 6th, 7pm at the Quartzsite Public Library. This presentation is made possible by Arizona Humanities.
