Occasionally, musicians may have a progression (a pattern of chords) that they play to unlock the creative juicer located just behind our consciousness. There are people who are great at writing lyrics (or poetry) and can collaborate with musicians that have the skill of adding harmony (accompaniment) to the words or even add notes to go with the lyrics, creating a melody. There is no correct way to write a song. Find a workflow that caters to your skills. If you are a poet, write lyrics and find someone else who knows how to play guitar or piano that will help you. If you are a guitar J. Justin Harper player who is too shy to sing either find a person that loves to sing or "fall in love with the sound of your own voice." Open up and collaborate. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't work out. Move on, and be flexible. You'll find that personality types, similar interests, or having a common goal can go a long way in having a successful songwriting team. Look at the credits on your CDs (if have not moved into a completely digital world) and you will find that the best songs are co-written. So what does a song have? Pop music has a hook; the part that gets stuck in your head ("Oppan Gagnam Style!"). Country music tells a story, usually featuring 3 verses, a chorus, and a bridge. Gospel music loves to have a key change and a vamp (repeated part that builds). There are all sorts of 'how-to' guides on songwriting.
