OCTOBER 10-16, 2018 UCW 31 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication Ewwww! At Kirby High School in Mem- phis, Tennessee, things are quiet as a mouse ... or a rat. Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dorsey Hop- son told the Memphis Commercial Appeal he's looking for a temporary home for Kirby's 800 students after closing the school Sept. 5 due to a rat infestation. e problem started in mid-Au- gust, when district personnel uncov- ered a rat's nest during a renovation project. Eighty rats were trapped at the school, and poison was set out. When students returned after Labor Day, poisoned rats began dying with- in the school's walls and the stench became overwhelming. Calling the situation an "unavoid- able act of nature," Hopson said he expects students to return in early November. [Memphis Commercial Appeal, 9/7/2018] Bright idea It's one way to get a ride to lunch: Knox County (Kentucky) Sheriff 's deputies responded on Aug. 24 to a home in Corbin, where Kenneth Ray Couch, 35, had reportedly sto- len a handgun. As they searched for Couch, they learned he had been transported to the hospital in an am- bulance after staging a heart attack at nearby Dixon's market. When police arrived at Baptist Health Corbin, WYMT reported, they found Couch in the cafeteria, which had apparently been his goal all along. Couch was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary and falsely reporting an incident. [WYMT, 8/27/2018] Compelling explanations After trying repeatedly on Sept. 12 to pull over a Toyota Prius driving with expired tags on I-5 near Marys- ville, Washington, a Washington State Patrol officer finally caught up to the car at an intersection and verbally instructed the unnamed 42-year-old woman driver to pull over, reported the Everett Daily Herald. "I will not. I drive a Prius," was the woman's reply. e officer then asked her to step out of the vehicle, which she also re- fused to do, so he forced her out. "I will own your bank account," she told him. "I will own your house." When he asked her name, she re- sponded, "None of your business." Finally, she was arrested for failing to obey instructions, failing to identify herself and obstruction. Question: Seeing ads for "God Friended Me" and I immediately think of "Kevin (Probably) Saves e World," with Jason Ritter as Kevin, which I liked a lot but the show never made it to a second season. So for that reason alone, and not want- ing to invest my time in something that might not click (regardless of "God" hav- ing a part in this one), combined with the familiarity factor, I probably won't even tune in to sample it. Unless you've seen previews and highly recommend. – Michael Matt Roush: I hear a lot of this sort of comment this time of year, from people who've been burned by cancellations and are wary to commit to new pro- grams. In this case, I'd advise taking a leap of faith, especially if this is your type of show. "God Friended Me" has some similarities to "Kevin," though the premise doesn't seem nearly as convo- luted, and not unlike Jason Ritter, the lead, Brandon Micheal Hall, has plenty of charisma as the atheist who keeps getting messages from a mysterious "God" account. (Bonus: "Scandal's" Joe Morton plays his pastor dad.) Another plus: "God" seems more compatible to CBS's schedule – the network of the long-running "Touched by an Angel," let's not forget – than "Kevin" ever did on ABC, and it's in a cushier Sunday time period, so while there's never any guarantee of success, I'd expect this to have a better chance at a decent run. To submit questions to TV Critic Matt Roush, go to: tvinsider.com by Damian Holbrook Jeers to "Black Mirror" for being a cate- gorical lie. Yes, we love the Star Trek–in- spired "USS Callister" episode with Jesse Plemons too, but that's exactly what it is: a great episode of a Netflix series. It's not an outstanding television movie, like Lifetime's stellar "Flint" or HBO's "e Tale," both of which it bested. Sorry, but this one is black and white. Cheers to Emmy Voters for shak- ing things up. Winners Darren Criss ("Assassination of Gianni Versace's" limited series lead actor), Henry Win- kler ("Barry's" supporting actor in a comedy) and Rachel Brosnahan ("e Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's" lead comedy actress) were all dark horses going in – and walked away with bright, shiny statues. know in the stay www.upandcomingweekly.com We can help you learn what is happening in and around Fayetteville!
