16 www.DesertMessenger.com October 3, 2018 By Jackie Deal If Sardines Could Fly... How many sardines will fi t in a can? How many people can be crammed into an airplane the size of a sardine can? My right shoulder rubbed the plane's wall, my left shoulder nes- tled under my seat mate's arm. He was a leg jigger and I jiggled with him—all the way from Eugene, Oregon to Los Angeles (LAX) airport. It was 7 a.m. I'd been up since 2 a.m. I'm headed for Honolulu, Waikiki Beach. The fl ight was smooth, no complaints there. The Attendant (remember when they were Stewardess or Hostess?) pushed her Barbie-doll- sized cart down the aisle. "Cookies or pretzels? We're out of sandwiches." Ah, well. Eugene to LAX: down through whipped cream clouds. I'm beginning to get the hang of it. Purse draped around my neck and cross body, roll-along cart tripping my neighbors feet, neck pillow fi rmly buttoned around cart bruising more neighbors. LAX to Honolulu: a three hour time change makes my day longer than the clock says. I have a B seat, that means I'm the middle sardine. For- tunately, my seat mates are young men and don't spill over into my seat. (Hear the Cougar growl?) Honolulu airport is a maze; up stairs, down stairs, round and round. Where is Gate 20? It disappeared? Oh, it's upstairs? Why didn't they say so? The van driver -when we fi nally found where he was hiding- was a wealth of information all the way to our condo. "You haven't been here since the 80s or the 90s? Well, you've never been to Waikiki then." He was so right! All evidence of the beach is hidden by high rise condos and hotels. See that tiny strip of blue? No, it isn't sky, that's the water! Our condo (see the ownership already?) was a gift from Heaven. A fel- low RV park resident couldn't use their week in a condo exchange so they "auctioned" it off. My friend Cheryl and I bid on it and won for a pittance. Cheryl was a perfect companion; she knew the ropes for fl ying, fi guring out bus schedules and how to get sushi at half price! And did I mention that McDonald's was just across the street from our condo? We had coffee and breakfast at a little one-story "Aching Arches" nestled between 30-story condos. I wonder how long before some devel- oper snatches that up and replaces it with 40-stories of cement and steel? That fi rst evening, Cheryl headed for the beach and got her nickname of "Beach Bunny." I snuggled with an iced tea, and enjoyed the view from 16 stories up. My name? "The Beach Jack Rabbit." Stay tuned for more adventures from Bunny and Rabbit.
