Now for years the rally has been informally known as "the Crab Rally" but the faint-hearted offi cers of the group are always afraid there won't be enough crab for everyone so they call it the Fall or Coast Rally. Does 112 crab for 63 people sound like enough? That's what our intrepid crabbers caught: 112 crab and all legal size and sex. There was much grumbling the fi rst day because the channel was being dredged by heavy equipment (very heavy) and this disrupts the crabs' dwellings, known as crab beds. But with 4 boats the fi rst day and 3 boats the next day, they managed. It seems Ed Bonham (a Sutherlin winter resident and also a Quartzite musician) had problems with his boat's motor (about $400 worth!) so there was one less boat on the second day. The rally site on the Oregon Coast is about 101 miles from Sutherlin where we reside in the summer. It's a beautiful drive along winding rivers and beneath green trees, lots and lots of trees. Sometimes they hang over the road and make a complete canopy of green. I love the green, but I've also learned to love Quartzsite's purple mountains and desert browns and since I can have each for 6 months I have the best of all worlds. The fi rst day of the rally was getting settled in and hugging. Lots and lots of hugging, you'd think we'd come across country to meet folks we hadn't seen in years instead of just 100 miles ago! We had a pulled pork dinner the fi rst night polished off with a dessert pot-luck. Have you any idea how many deserts that could possibly mean? We had dessert three times a day for the next three days! And someone had the audacity to buy a gallon of ice cream to top things off. One night we went to the Indian casino, Three Rivers at Florence, Oregon and there we gave back to the Indians part of what our forefathers might have taken from them. Some of us gave back more than others and very few of us were takers! The casino is probably about the size of Blue Waters and the machines are just as tight! We had our annual business meeting where it befell my lot to be secre- tary of the group (again), some people just don't learn. The evening was completed with a "White Elephant" sale; no elephants but there was a frog with a very annoying croak. The highlight (for me anyway) was the auctioning off of a one week's condo stay on Waikiki beach; yes, that Waikiki beach in Honolulu. I WON IT!! Well, with another retired nurse friend: we bid and won. Airfare has been arranged and I'll be leaving on a real trip Sept. 22-29, fl ying from Eugene, Oregon to LAX (Los Angeles) to Honolulu. Get packed, you're going with me! Travelogue read Desert Messenger MyQuartzsite.com E-EDITION: online DEADLINE : WED.
