22 UCW AUGUST 8-14, 2018 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM CUMBERLAND Child Support Extends Hours in August T he Cumberland County Child Support Department is observing National Child Support Awareness Month in August by offering extended hours and holding information sessions each Wednesday during the month. "is is a great time for people to come to our office and learn about the services we offer and how we can help them," said Child Support Director James McQueen. "We want to let people know that our office works to ensure the children are receiving the support they need and deserve." Child support staff members work with custodial and noncustodial parents, employers, the courts and community partners to ensure parents provide critical financial and medical support for their children. Services provided include: noncustodial parent location, establishment of paternity, establishment or modification of child support orders, enforcement of child support obligations, collection and processing of child support payments. In fiscal year 2018, the Cumberland County Child Support Department collected more than $40 million in child support, which provided financial assistance to over 15,000 children. Normal office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. T he Cumberland County Board of Elections is seeking precinct workers for the 2018 General Election Nov. 8. Republican and unaffiliated registered voters are needed to be precinct officials in all 77 precincts in Cumberland County. Registered voters from any party are needed to be precinct workers in the Beaver Dam, Bordeaux, Falcon, Glendale Acres, Judson-Vander and Linden areas. Interested individuals must: • Be U.S. citizens • Be registered voters in Cumberland County • Be available to attend required training, set up and operate a laptop computer and printer • Remain non-partisan on the day of the election • Be available to work Election Day from 5:30 a.m. until dismissed by the Chief Judge, usually between 9 and 11 p.m. Precinct workers are compensated for attending training and for working Election Day. C hairman Larry Lancaster and County Manager Amy Cannon helped youth in the Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Government Tour learn about county government July 20 when the tour's last day was held in the Historic Courthouse. e tour was held July 16 - 20. Lancaster explained how the commissioners establish policies and laws, set the property tax rate and pass the county budget. Cannon explained the responsibility of county management to oversee numerous county departments and create a balanced budget every year. A graduation ceremony and pizza party were held aerward. Children in the Youth Government Tour visited various county departments during the week including Social Services, Public Health, Veterans Services, Solid Waste, Crown Complex as well as the North Carolina Courts system.
