JULY 18-24, 2018 UCW 27 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication To absent friends During the 2014 World Cup, five friends in Durango, Mexico, made a pact to travel to the 2018 tournament in Russia. ey saved their money, bought a bus, painted it in Mexico's colors and booked passage for themselves and the bus on a ship going to Spain where, e Daily Mail reported, the friends planned to drive the bus to Russia. But just before they boarded the ship in April, one of the five, Javier, told his friends his wife had put the kibosh on his trip. So the remaining four did the next best thing: ey made a cardboard life-size cutout of Javier, looking grumpy and wearing a shirt that says, "My wife didn't let me go," and set off for Russia. e cardboard Javier has been very popular at the soc- cer venues, attracting female admirers, appearing on the big screen, crowdsurf- ing and being photographed with fellow football fans from all over the world. [e Daily Mail, 6/18/2018] Art makes a statement To kick off an exhibition focused on the opioid crisis at his Stamford, Con- necticut, art gallery on June 22, gallery owner Fernando Alvarez and artist Do- menic Esposito placed an 800-pound, 11-foot-long steel sculpture of a bent and burned spoon in front of the head- quarters of Purdue Pharma, makers of OxyContin. Purdue has been the subject of lawsuits alleging deceptive marketing and, therefore, responsibility for opioid addiction and overdose issues. "e spoon has always been an albatross for my family," said Esposito, whose brother has struggled with drug addiction for 14 years. e Associated Press reported po- lice arrested Alvarez for obstructing free passage and confiscated the spoon as evidence. [Associated Press, 6/22/2018] Suspicions Confirmed Visitors crowding into a Vancouver, Canada, street festival on June 17 were invited – at $38 a pop – to try a new health craze: Hot Dog Water. e drink is marketed as a gluten-free, Keto diet-compatible, post-workout source of sodium and electrolytes, and every sleek bottle, which prom- ises to help with weight loss, also contains a hot dog. It's also a prank. Hot Dog Water CEO Douglas Bevans told Global News the product was dreamed up as a response to the "snake oil salesmen" of health mar- keting. In small print at the bottom of the sales sheet is this disclaimer: "Hot Dog Water in its absurdity hopes to encourage critical thinking related to product marketing and the signifi- cant role it can play in our purchas- ing choices." Question: PLEASE tell me I am not go- ing crazy. ere is a character in the new "Incredibles" movie that looks exactly like Linda Hunt's character Hetty Lange from "NCIS: Los Angeles." What's up? Or have I totally lost it? – Dee Matt Roush: You must be referring to the character of Edna Marie "E" Mode, the superhero costume designer and confidante. She was also in the first movie, which premiered in 2004, years before "NCIS: LA" came along – and while many do see in Edna a marked resemblance to Linda Hunt, the report- ed inspiration was famed Hollywood costumer Edith Head (look her up, you'll see the likeness). Edna's voice, by the way, is provided by "Incredibles" writer/director Brad Bird. Question: at was a wonderful tribute to Richard Benjamin Harrison (aka "the Old Man") on "Pawn Stars." It was so well-produced, I am wondering if they prepared it ahead of time while he was ill? – David B Matt Roush: I'm sure that must be the case. I read that "Pawn Stars" was not currently in production when "the Old Man" passed last week, and he had been ill for some time, so it would sur- prise me if the producers hadn't com- piled that tribute well in advance. For fans who missed it, the complete epi- sode can be screened on history.com. To submit questions to TV Critic Matt Roush, go to tvinsider.com. by Damian Holbrook Jeers to NBC for not champion- ing "Champions." Mindy Kaling's whipsmart comedy starring Anders Holm and J.J. Totah should have been promoted as the perfect pairing to "Will & Grace." Instead, they all but ignored the appealing freshman gem, messed with the scheduling, and now it's been officially axed. Must-See TV like this one deserved better! Cheers to "Supergirl" for making Winn a hero in his own right. Jeremy Jordan's nerdy DEO tech was always the Winn beneath bestie Kara's wings (sorry), but when the actor opted to exit at the end of Season 3, the writers sweetly sent him off to help the Legion of Su- perheroes battle evil in the future. Who needs powers?
