Only in certain cas- es does a show get a renewal early enough to be absolutely sure of having another sea- son by the time its current season ends — and while some producers gamble that a cliffhanger will guarantee a renewal, so that fans won't be upset by loose ends that nev- er will be resolved, it doesn't always work out that way. A very recent example is Fox's "Lucifer," which re- ceived its cancellation notice just a few days before the airing of what turned out to be its series finale.
