After a fairly competitive first quarter, which saw Central Valleys Katana Martina score six points and grab four boards, the Spartans played tenacious defense to blow the game wide open the rest of the way. And once Red Bluffs freshman, 6-foot-2 center Payten McKerras got going, she wouldnt be stopped. McKerras, who notched a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, was a dominant force inside the paint. She altered shots and worked her way to seven blocks in the first-round matchup. Red Bluff built on its 13-9 first quarter advantage by outscoring the Lady Falcons 22- 7 in the second to take a 35-16 lead into the locker room. Red Bluff didnt allow a Central Valley field goal until about two minutes left before halftime. To start the third, Red Bluffs junior sharpshooter Emily Gallagher hit back-to-back threepoint shots to give the Spartans a 41-16 advantage. McKerras scored 10 points in the period and the Spartans took a 57-24 lead into the fourth. With the Spartans working their way to a running clock, Gallagher would steal the ball for a layup with about 6:45 left in the game. On the next play, Red Bluff junior guard Adrienne Hinkston would do the same. Hinkston finished with six points on the night, with four coming in the fourth. Up next for the Lady Spartans will be a matchup against either Ferndale or West Valley in the semifinal round at 7 p.m. Friday. Los Molinos C. Christian 7 p.m. GIRLS HOOPS Los Molinos C. The Corning Lady Cardinals (6-4) varsity basketball team had its work cut out for them in opening round play at the Red Bluff Holiday Classic. The Enterprise Lady Hornets (6-0) cut through the Cornings defensive scheme to cruise to a 69-38 victory on Wednesday and earned a spot in the Classics semifinal round where the team will face Shasta at 4 p.m. Friday. Corning got off to a rough start, turning the ball over numerous times, which led to easy Enterprise layups. The Lady Cards did have success driving the ball to the basket, drawing seven fouls from the Hornets in the first quarter, but the team couldnt fully capitalize on Enterprises foul woes in the first half. At the end of the first quarter, Corning found itself in a 19-10 hole and couldnt climb out. Thats when Enterprises Rachel Martin and Kamira Sanders took over the game. Martin, who finished with a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, scored eight of those points in the second quarter. Sanders added seven in the period and the Hornets took a 48-16 lead into the half. Cornings only points came from the freethrow line in the second, where the notched six. The Lady Cards did bring some life to their game with a 16-point third quarter, which saw Keara Terras score six, Rachel Silva add three, and Shyanne Petty score three of her own. Corning would hold Enterprise to 19 in the period and go into the fourth down 67-32. With a running clock in the fourth, the Cards would outscore the Hornets 6-2 in the period, but the damage was already done. The Lady Cards next face Paradise at 1 p.m. today at Red Bluff High School. Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 5272151, ext. 111 or at sports@redbluffdailynews.c om.
