2A Daily News Thursday, December 13, 2012 Community people&events Potted for a winter welcome Masonic open house The Los Molinos Masonic Family Center, 25020 Tehama Vina Road in Los Molinos, held an Open House Nov. 24. The Open House began with a dedication of the lodges new front landscaping. A certificate of appreciation and gift card was presented to Charlie and Terra Ingram, owners of Cutting Edge Landscaping, for donating their time and labor installing the landscaping. The Los Molinos Masonic Family Center wholeheartedly recommends Cutting Edge Landscaping of Red Bluff to anyone looking for quality landscaping services. Visitors from Los Molinos, Corning, Red Bluff and Chico attended for tours and information regarding the Masons and its affiliates, Eastern Star for ladies, Rainbow for young ladies, and Demolay for young men. Students from elementary schools in Los Molinos, Vina, Richfield and Gerber participated in the Child I.D. program conducted during the Open House. The Masonic Child I.D. program scans in the thumb prints and photo taken on site to a computer. The fingerprint card is then printed out and given to the parent, who in turn fills out and retains the card with the childs name and other pertinent information. None of the information is retained by the Masonic Family Center. At the conclusion of the Open House a light lunch and refreshments were served. By CATHY WILSON December has arrived and the holidays are fast approaching. Many of us will be doing some sort of entertaining with family or friends. Why not greet them with a gaily decorated winter container or containers filled seasonal dcor and plants placed by the front door? Instead of retiring your pots for the winter, select one or several and fill them with eye-catching combinations of cold-hardy plants and cuttings. The extra textures and color will instantly brighten the entrance to your home and extend a warm and hardy welcome to your quests. Search your nurseries for living plants such as small evergreen trees and shrubs. Look in your own landscape for evergreen boughs, colorful stems, berries, pine cones and seed pods that provide interest and beauty. Also look in craft stores for nature inspired pieces to complement your arrangement. Add lights and Christmas bulbs to brighten the vignette. When selecting your container, select one that will be suitable for your creation. Then find a plastic pot that fits inside to plant in. This allows you two advantages: one is that you can plant and arrange in a warmer environment and two it will be easier to carry to put into the heavier container which you have previously located in an ideal spot. If using more than one pot, vary the heights of the containers for more interest. Different colored pots can be used but the colors would be more attractive if harmonious. Contrasting colors can also be used but use similar materials in each pot to create cohesive theme. To reduce the need for watering if placed on a porch with an overhead, select an area with eastern and northern exposures. Normally watering in winter is greatly reduced but to maintain cut boughs for an extended time, some moisture is necessary. If you are fortunate to have an outdoor outlet, add some lighting. It will illuminate your pots during the dark evening hours and create a festive effect. Your guests will be impressed and you will be fulfilled by your accomplishment. The Red Bluff Garden Club welcomes all to their monthly meetings on the last Tuesday of the month. However there will be no regular meeting in December. The next meeting will be Jan 29 at 1:00. Chris Moats will be speaking on Seeds-Veggies. The Red Bluff Garden Club is affiliated with National Garden Clubs inc., California Garden Clubs Inc., Pacific Region and Cascade District.
