Golfers try to tame Wilcox Oaks Back 9 By RICHGREENE DNSports Editor The 2010 Les Schwab Tires Red Bluff Pro-Am kicks off with the 3-person horse race, today at Wilcox Oaks and continues with first and final round tourna- ment competition Sunday and Monday. The field includes five former champions, including the 2009 winner, Redding’s Dan Scott. Two-time champion Jarrod Warner, who plays out of Klamath Falls and works at Harbor Links, is back as are past champions Brian Jones, a PGA member, former PGA tour member Eric Batten. and J.J. Abraham, a pro at Mount Shas- ta Resort. Daily News photo by Rich Greene Los Molinos catcher Sean Conrad holds on to tag out East Nicolaus’ Kevin Logsdon, Friday. By RICHGREENE DNSports Editor LOSMOLINOS— As good as the Bulldogs’ offense has been this season, sometimes you just run into a quality pitcher. That was the case Friday night, when East Nicolaus starter John Kukuruda held Los Molinos hitless through a mercy-shortened 5-inning 11-1 win the for the visitors. East Nicolaus remained unbeaten in the Mid-Valley League and improved to 20-3 overall, while the Bulldogs dropped to 3-4 in the MVL and 7-8 overall. Kukuruda struck out 10 batters in his five innings of work and allowed only four Los Molinos base runners. In the third inning, Andrew Suer- tees reached on a catcher interference call and John Suertees drew a walk. In the fifth and final inning, , Michael Kling was hit by a pitch and Graham Wagenfuhr drew a walk. Neither time did Los Molinos get a base runner past second. As hard to hit as Kukuruda was, the Bulldogs did the most damage to them- selves in the second inning. Already trailing 3-0, the Bulldogs made errors on three consecutive plays that would have given them a third out. Instead East Nicolaus tacked on four more runs and had a 7-0 lead for their dominant starter. The Spartans put two more runs on the board in the third inning and then SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Barry Zito won four straight deci- sions to start the season for the first time in his career, helping the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 5-2 Friday night. Zito (4-0), receiving chants of ‘‘Barry! Barry!’’ for the second straight outing at home, pitched eight innings and settled down after falling behind 1-0 in the first. The left-han- der followed an impressive eight-inning, 10-strikeout effort against St. Louis last Saturday with another solid start, and he has yet to give up a home run in 2010. After allowing an RBI single to Carlos Gonzalez in the first, Zito retired the next 10 in order before Todd Helton drew a two-out walk in the fourth. Aubrey Huff hit a two-run double and Juan Uribe hit a two-run single in the fourth, connecting on the first pitch from Aaron Cook (1-3) following a five-minute delay when a fan jumped the left-field fence and was tackled in the Giants bullpen. Uribe, playing shortstop late in the game after starting at second base, made a great running catch in foul territory near where the tarp is kept to end the eighth inning with a runner on third. Zito yelled ‘‘Whoo!’’ and pumped his fist as the crowd jumped to its feet. Sergio Romo started the ninth instead of regular closer Brian Wilson, who blew his first save Wednesday. But Jere- my Affeldt relieved after Melvin Mora’s two-out double, and recorded the final out for his second save in three chances. Pablo Sandoval added an RBI single in the fifth for the Giants, giving him a career-best 10-game hitting streak. Carlos Gonzalez had an RBI single in the first to put the Rockies ahead, but Colorado couldn’t do enough to back Cook. The Rockies also scored on a wild pitch as they kicked off a nine-game road trip against NL West teams. Both managers shook up their lineups for the series open- er after a day off Thursday. The Rockies’ Jim Tracy moved Helton down a spot from the cleanup hole to fifth and used Troy Tulowitzki in the No. 4 slot. Giants skipper Bruce Bochy returned Bengie Molina to the cleanup hole where he batted last season, dropping Huff down to the fifth spot. Gonzalez hits 2 homers, Blue Jays beat Athletics TORONTO (AP) — Alex Gonzalez hit two home runs, Vernon Wells also connected and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Oakland Athletics 10-2 Friday night. Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in the second inning and led off the sixth with a drive down the left-field line. It was the eighth multihomer game of his career. Gonzalez has hit seven home runs this month, a team record for a shortstop in April. Marco Scutaro hit five last April. Wells had three hits, including his eighth home run. Toronto, which came in with an AL-leading 32 homers, sent the A’s to their sixth straight road loss. Brandon Morrow (2-2) got the win. two more in the fourth thanks to a Joey Sleva homer. Los Molinos pitcher Reggie Points struck out four in taking the loss. Despite the score, the Bulldogs did make some spectacular plays. They gunned out a runner at home plate in the third and short stop Jc Con- rad displayed a strong throwing arm on a couple of tough infield plays. The Bulldogs even turned a 1-6-3 double play in the fifth inning. East Nicolaus also beat the Lady Bulldogs in softball, Friday, 11-1. Los Molinos showed some fight, even holding onto a 1-0 lead through the first three innings. East Nicolaus improved to 7-1 in the MVL and Los Molinos fell to 3-5. Zito starts year 4-0 Tehama Tracker Spartans baseball Red Bluff avoided a trip-up Friday night with an 11-1 win at Enter- prise to set up a fascinat- ing final week of the Eastern Athletic League season. The Spartans improved to 9-2 in the EAL with games Tues- day at Paradise, Wednes- day at Pleasant Valley and at Shasta on Friday. EJ Stanton struck out six Enterprise batters in three innings for Red Bluff. Cody Gappa and Scott Avery each collected three hits and drove in a run. Maison Etzler tripled and singled and Jordan Fox had a pair of dou- bles. Cardinals softball Corning suffered its first setback of the Northern Athletic League season, Friday, in an 8-2 loss to Yreka. Erica White drove in a run for Corning and Anna Curry, Lizeth Wil- fong and Vada Bree Sutfin each had two hits, Corning is 8-5-1 over- all and 3-1 in the NAL. Warriors baseball Mercy improved to 4- 0 in the Tri-Cities League, Thursday, with a 14-6 win over Univer- sity Prep. Michael Uhalde drove in five runs and tripled. Dylan Thomas drove in two and had two hits. Sam Kellar had two RBIs and drew four walks. Pat Farmer picked up four hits, including a double and drove in a run. Scott Farmer drove in a run, singled and dou- bled. Mitchell Lopez had an RBI and Cameron Vietti picked up two hits. Warriors softball Mercy has already overcome a slow start and a brutal injury to their star pitcher and on Thursday added a hail storm and late-inning collapse to their resume. The Lady Warriors evened their record at 7- 7 overall and are a per- fect 4-0 in the TCL fol- lowing a 9-7 win at Uni- versity Prep. Mercy fought off an early deficit and a stop- page of play for a hail storm to take a three-run lead into the sixth inning. But U-Prep fought back with three runs to tie the game and send it to extra innings. The resilient Lady Warriors made the most of the opportunity in the extra inning when Adri- ana Ramos led off with a triple. Gabriel Reynoza then drove home Ramos for her second RBI of the game and for insurance was driven home by win- ning pitcher Natasha Czajka. This time, Mercy held on to the lead. Benicia Grace home- red in the game and drove in two runs. Ramos drove in three runs and Diana Van Ert had two RBIs. Bulldogs track and field The Lady Bulldogs were spectacular, Thurs- day, at the Mt. Shasta Time Trials. Linzy Irle won both the 800 and 1600 meters and Carolyna Salazar picked up wins in the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump. On the boys side, Kevin Garnica placed second in the shotput. Amongst the other notables is the 2009 runner-up Dane Judson, Bakersfield’s Chad Sorensen, Greg Senestraro from Fortuna and the Jakovac combination of J.J. and Jason. Forecasts should provide better weather than last year when Scott won the tournament with a 145, the highest championship score since the tournament began in 1992. The tournament record is a 133, shot by Craig Howard in 1997. Even with a packed field, the toughest challenge for golfers at the Red Bluff Pro-Am will once again be Wilcox Oaks’ difficult Back 9. Many professionals view Wilcox Oaks as being made up of two separate courses. The open fairways found on the first nine holes, narrow dramatically in a Back 9 lined with trees, trees and more trees. While the Pro-Am itself may be the most lucrative, it’s not the only event set for the next three days. Today’s 3-person amateur horse race begins at 2:30 p.m. On Sunday, there’s a putting contest at 7:30 a.m., followed up with the first round of the tournament teeing off at 8 a.m. The Tehama County Shriners helicopter golf ball drop is set for 4 p.m. with another horse race competition to follow at 4:30 p.m. The tournament wraps up with 8 a.m. tee off times for the final round on Monday followed by a lunch for all partici- pants and an award ceremony.
