W e all have those memories, the ones engrained in our minds of days gone by and life's big moments. Alpha Chi Omega and the Alpha Beta Chapter are a huge part of those memories for me and I hope they are for you too. They aren't just memories from my time as a collegian, but from my time as an alumna, a volunteer and a woman who strives "to shed the light of love and friendship around me." A flood of memories come to mind when I think of my sisters and it's hard not to laugh, cry, and feel happiness. I didn't really know what to expect of Greek life or the sorority experience back then, but I never imagined it would shape me into the woman I am today and the women I surround myself with. Sometimes, I think we forget how much our sisters and our chapter were there for us as we embarked on an adventure called college; a place of change, high expectations, heartache, failures, growth and decisions that would affect our futures. Once we graduated, many sisters remained a part of our lives as we took on a new role: adulthood. Women at this age need stability in their lives, strong and real friendships, active and engaged role models, support for life's ups and downs and a place to call home. Actually, women at every age need these things. You know what? Alpha Chi Omega and Alpha Beta provided that for us and continue to provide that for our sisters. THE CHALLENGE I am making a big ask of my sisters—two, actually. First, will you give to our chapter's centennial campaign, Celebrating Our Past, Securing Our Future? Second, will you attend Alpha Beta's centennial celebration this September at Purdue University? I make these asks of you as an Alpha Chi who "seeks the heights" and an Alpha Beta who is proud of her chapter, one that is a leader within the fraternity and on campus. As women, we are often very generous with our time, love and selfless acts. Somewhere, though, we lost sight of the fact that our financial gifts can also make a huge impact. I've grown tired of hearing that this fraternity surpassed their campaign goal and that fraternity's house is new and wonderful. I'm tired of not seeing more women make financial contributions to enhance their philanthropic efforts. I want to be a part of the tide to change that and am respectfully asking you to join me. Please hear my challenge and take it to heart, letting your lyre "send forth the chords of love, unselfishness, sincerity." I challenge you to show your love for Alpha Beta by attending the centennial celebration this fall to reconnect with the women whom you love, and by making a financial contribution to the campaign. This is my challenge and it's our symphony. Let's let everyone know about it. THE CELEBRATION In 2012, a group of Alpha Betas celebrating sisterhood at the national convention in St. Louis witnessed another chapter receiving their centennial banner and it occurred to us that our chapter's 100th birthday was quickly approaching! Campaign volunteers and leaders have planned for this milestone ever since, booking the Purdue Memorial Union and reserving hotel blocks three and two years ago, respectively. Active sisters who graduated within the past few years have heard about our centennial throughout their entire membership, something that never was on my mind as a collegian. Centennial festivities will begin with a brunch at the chapter house on Saturday, September 29, followed by a chapter meeting. The official chapter meeting is to remind us all of our ritual and the significance it has on our sisterhood. The program will include membership milestones (anniversary pinnings), a State of the Chapter address from the chapter president, and a State of the Enterprise address from AXΩ National President Angela Costley Harris '86, the first Alpha Beta to ever serve in this capacity. We are blessed to have her in this dual role as chapter sister and leader. After the chapter meeting, the afternoon is open for individual or group plans. Sisters are welcomed to visit the chapter house for tours and a dessert reception with some of our favorite treats from some of Alpha Beta's past and present cooks. Take this time to view the renovations to our beautiful home and to thank our Home Corporation Board, which has led various efforts over the years to update and maintain the chapter house. We are grateful for their leadership, time and commitment. Additionally, active members will help coordinate campus tours and we hope to have The Boilermaker Special available to show you around the ever-changing, ever-true Purdue campus. Saturday will conclude with a celebration gala at the Purdue Memorial Union for sisters and their spouses or significant others. We will enjoy a cocktail reception, followed by a formal dinner and dancing. PMO group Heart & Soul will perform—a special nod to our founders and their music appreciation. AXΩ National Fraternity will also provide an official centennial presentation to the chapter. Sunday brunch at the chapter house, a longtime tradition of Alpha Chi Omega at Purdue, will conclude the weekend.
