By RICH GREENE Staff Writer Public officials, fellow Rotarians, family and friends celebrated the late George Russell Tuesday by cutting the ribbon on something that will honor him forever a children's art gallery in his name at the Red Bluff branch of the Tehama County Library. George's Gallery, an art wall honoring the former county supervisor and educational administrator who passed away in September, will house artwork and poetry produced by local school children. With the words dream and inspire stenciled above, the wall will serve to combine two of Russell's most endearing passions children and education. I can't imagine anything more appropriate, said Russell's widow, Sharon Russell. He loved to read, I hardly ever saw him without a book in his hand. Sharon joked the only way the tribute could have been more appropriate would be if it incorporated golf. The Board of Supervisors approved the wall Nov. 14. The project was funded by the Red Bluff Friends of the Library. That group was presented a check for $250 by Red Bluff Rotary shortly before Sharon officially cut the ribbon. In recognition of the schools 125th anniversary, CSU, Chicos President Paul Zingg launched the North State Initiative Task Force to focus on serving the 12 counties within its CSU-defined region, a CSU, Chico release said. As a first step, the school surveyed the campus programs, activities and services to the Northstate, Maggie Payne, CSU, Chico Interim Dean of the College Education, said. Many of them are a part of our students education, but some are purely for the people of the community, Payne said. There are 209 services and programs. The school is working on building a website that should be out sometime in late January or early February that would allow people in the 12 counties to see what is offered for their county or a listing of what is offered by category, Payne said. The website will also have short videos of the stories of people who have taken part in the programs or activities and how it benefited them, she said. According to the latest report from AAA Northern California, regular unleaded gasoline prices are down 26 cents in the last month in the North State. Northern Californians are paying an average of $3.56, as every metro area in the area saw a decrease of at least 9 cents from a month ago. In Red Bluff regular gas ranged from $3.28 to $3.59 per gallon Tuesday according to GasBuddy.com. Prices at the pump have steadily declined across the country as demand continues to be low and supplies remain robust, AAA spokeswoman Cynthia Harris said. The exception is the East Coast where supplies are increasing but remain somewhat tight following the disruption in distribution from Hurricane Sandy. AAAs report said while demand will increase slightly for the remainder of the holiday season, overall demand is expected to remain low into 2013, which will keep downward pressure on gasoline prices. Lower crude oil prices have also contributed to the cheaper gas prices paid by consumers. Rich Greene News tip? Inspired by one of their own, Red Bluff Union High School will be adding a new life saving event in conjunction with the upcoming Holiday Classic basketball tournament. From noon to 6 p.m. Thursday the school will host a drive to register bone marrow transplant donors on behalf of teacher Betsy Palubeski, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia. As part of the Be The Match Foundation, Palubeskis team is hoping to raise $500 to help pay for the tissue typing of all new registry members signing up for the national bone marrow registry. It costs about $100 to pay for an individual donor to be tested and added to the registry. Palubeskis team has already raised $445 of its goal The team is also hoping to add as many new donors as members can find. Each year only about half of the nearly 10,000 patients seeking marrow transplants find a match. A preferred donor match is typically a sibling, but around 45 percent of transplants done by the City of Hope Hos- PHYSICIAN REFERRAL A FREE SERVICE PROVIDED FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE 1-888-628-1948 pital, where Palubeski is being treated in Duarte, come from unrelated donors. Doctors look for donors who have matching human leukocyte antigens (HLA) markers. Those markers are found throughout most cells in a body that an immune system uses to recognize which cells belong and which dont. Those wishing to become donors need to be between the ages of 18 and 44, in good health and be willing to donate to any patient in need. Joining the registry doesnt guarantee a person will donate. If a match is made, additional information about the cost-free and relatively painless life saving procedure will be provided by the Be The Match Foundation. Cash donations are being accepted at Thursdays drive, online or by mail. Team Betsy can be found at bethematchfoundation.org/goto/hope4betsy. Donations can be mailed to City of Hope, Be The Match Registry, c/o Joyce Valdez, 1500 E. Durate Road, Durate, CA 910010. Checks should be made payable to Be The Match Foundation and include Betsy Palubeski in the memo line.
