ALPHA EPSILON PHI
3
hen it came down to choosing
a sorority at The Ohio State
University, Zoë Smith '13 real-
ized that she felt most comfortable
at Alpha Epsilon Phi because she could be
herself. "I didn't have to be a different version
of myself," she said. At many of the other
houses she visited, the six-inch heels she
dreaded seemed mandatory. "I knew I could
come as myself, and AEPhi ultimately helped
me become a better person by letting me be
myself." Zoë's devotion to AEPhi continued
after graduation, leading her to her current
position as a traveling consultant for the
sorority.
For Zoë, her pride in the Rho Chapter was
something that grew over time. "When you're
only around your chapter, you don't realize
how great it really is." While she was never
on the executive board, Zoë became a leader
for the chapter by serving on the Panhellenic
board. This allowed her to give AEPhi a voice
on campus and helped develop her sense of
pride in the chapter. "AEPhi taught me that
the only way you don't succeed is if you don't
apply yourself," she said.
One experience Zoë remembers well is when
she attended the Undergraduate Interfraternity
Institute (UIFI) as the Rho chapter representa-
tive. It was during this event that a UIFI facili-
tator pulled her aside and first pitched to her
the idea of becoming a traveling consultant.
"It was like a lightbulb clicked on," Zoë said.
"There is never a perfect resume or candidate
but I had found what I was passionate about
and made it my goal to join the national staff
when I graduated."
Zoë is serving in her second year as a travel-
ing consultant, and her pride in AEPhi has
only grown. She has worked with more than
30 chapters, and for each one she visits,
their sisterhood is the core. "They are always
so excited to be involved with their chapter,"
Zoë said. "Girls contact me about what I do,
and I'm happy to share my experiences. In
my role, I gained the experiences of other
groups to my own with Rho. It's not about the
title, it's about inspiring the sisters to be their
best selves."
Future plans for Zoë include working in the
Jewish non-profit world, something she has
always been passionate about. "I wear an
AEPhi crest ring every day and think about
how I can live up to these values," she states.
"I'm lucky to love my job as much as I do. I
wouldn't be in this role without the chapter
helping me learn to put myself out there." If
