3 Lambda Chi Alpha D uring our 2017 Homecoming in Rolla, the brothers of Alpha- Delta Zeta celebrated our 100-year anniversary as a Chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha. The Chapter's history began in 1913, when the campus was called Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. A sopho- more named John Cole, 1913 came up with the idea to create an "eating" club where members could meet, eat nutritious meals, and enjoy some brotherly companionship. At the time, the campus already had two other eating clubs (Grubtakers and R-Way), so Cole recruited students, mainly from the school's freshman class, for this new club. They named the club Muckers, a name linked to the mining education at the school (a "mucker" is a name for a young, apprentice miner). In the fall of 1914, the Muckers were a healthy club with membership of 28, split mainly between freshman and sophomores. During the fall semester of 1916, the men were leaders in many campus organizations, including varsity sports and honor societies, and were ready to become a chapter of a national fraternity. In March of 1917, the men formally pe- titioned Lambda Chi Alpha to join their ranks as a Chapter. A few weeks later on the 21st of April, the Muckers became the 33rd Chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha, now known as Alpha- Delta Zeta. Harry Kluge, a senior, took the oath at Xi Chapter at DePauw University and became ΑΔ1. After 100 years, the Chapter has initiated 1,454 members. In all, nearly 250 alumni, actives, associates, and guests attended the cel- ebration weekend. The senior alumnus in attendance was Gerald Steven- son '63, who was initiated in 1956. The weekend included several socials, a golf tournament, a wine tasting, and most importantly, the rededication of our Chapter House. Beginning in the fall of 2011, Chapter alumni gathered and formed a capi- tal campaign to improve the Chapter House so it could meet the needs of the undergraduates and position Alpha-Delta to attract top student lead- ers. The original Chapter House was built in 1955 and had gone through multiple expansions including a major overhaul in 1965. The new renova- tion added 4,850 sq. ft. of living space and updated the facility to mod- ern standards. In total, the campaign raised $2,514,355, including a gift of over $500,000 from brother James Bertelsmeyer '66. Alumni, faculty, students, and city officials gathered for the formal rededication cere- mony. The former Alpha Delta Housing Corporation president, Len Kirberg '66, led the ceremony, which included speeches by the Chapter president, Patrick Coday '18, a graduating senior, Matthew Dorsey '17, and new associate, Conner Kolander '17. Reverend Robert Morrison was also on hand, from the First United Methodist Church, to bless the Chapter House. The weekend ended with a formal banquet at the Univer- sity's Hasselmann Alumni House. All donors to the capital campaign were honored at the event and several received spe- cial recognition, including brother Len Kirberg '66 for serving as our Housing Corporation president and leading the capital campaign, brother Gerald Stevenson '63 for his lifetime support to Alpha Delta, and brother James Bertelsmeyer '66 for his generous donation to the Chapter House renovation. Lastly, before ending, we were graced with the presence of the Grand High Pi, Jeffery Stuerman, who served as our guest speaker. O ver the last year Alpha-Delta Zeta of Lamb- da Chi Alpha has made many great strides. Academically, our Chapter has increased to eighth among Interfraternity Council chapters with an av- erage GPA of 3.137 for fall 2017. We previously held the 13th position. Our active members con- tinue to carry that GPA with an active house aver- age of 3.330 and a new member average of 2.868. To help increase academic accountability, we have instituted a program that we call the "Sigma Draft," where each member of the house is "drafted" onto a team and they earn points based off of test grades, grades for previous semesters, how much help they're getting outside of class, course difficulty, etc. It's a great competition to help incentivize con- tinuous good work. At the beginning of the spring 2018 semester, 17 associate members were initiated to be active members of our brotherhood. Their active num- bers range from A∆1456-A∆1472. Of that initi- ated class, three members were able to receive the $10,000 Bertelsmeyer Scholarship. Due to one of the previous recipients dropping from the Frater- nity, we re-awarded the remainder of his fund to George Garner '19, while the other two full schol- arships were given to Conner Kolander '21 and Joseph Kaufmann '22. We currently have eight associate members, one of whom is living out of the house. Philanthropically, we hosted our 57th annual chick- en benefit dinner in the fall of 2017, raising a total of $4,408 that was donated to two local charities: Gingerbread House and Russell House. We are also planning our third annual Watermelon Bash for this spring. It will be held at the Chapter House and all of the proceeds are donated to Lambda Chi Alpha's national philanthropy, Feeding America. In terms of recruitment, we, for the first time, will have a fully completed, brand-new house for an en- tire recruitment period and we are using that to our advantage. We hope to start fall of 2018 with 30 or AluMnus reflects on 100 yeArs of AlphA-DeltA Written by Scott Preston '97 and previously published in the Lambda Chi Alpha National Magazine Alpha-Delta Zeta Welcomes Home 17 New Members Chapter Improves to Eighth in Grades Out of MS&T Fraternities more new members who we can introduce to our brotherhood. With those numbers we should have a nearly full house, around 74 total members living in the Chapter, starting in the fall, which is where we would ideally like to be.
