May 13 - 19, 2018 WHATS UP! T5 BY ANDREW WARREN TV Media The heat is on: In an era when fake news, social media scandals and cries of censor- ship fill the landscape, it's a good time to remember that concerns about censorship and the ways that information is spread are far from new, with some of the 20th century's most-recognized novels deal- ing with the subject. 1953's "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Brad- bury is one of the best known, and now the book is getting the HBO treatment. "Fahrenheit 451" premieres Saturday, May 19, on HBO, with an all-star cast bringing the novel to life in a gorgeous film that's just as relevant today as the book was back in 1953. Michael B. Jordan ("Black Panther," 2018) headlines the cast as Montag, a fireman in a not-so-distant dystopian fu- ture. In this future version of America, the role of firemen has changed, though. They don't fight fires; they start them. In a world where books have become contraband and people get their entertainment from other sources, the firemen are responsible for burning any books that are found — along with the buildings in which they're discovered. Michael Shannon ("The Shape of Water," 2017) plays Montag's superior and mentor, Beatty, who becomes suspi- cious after Montag begins smuggling books out of the homes that they burn so that he can read them, while Sofia Boutella ("Kingsman: The Se- cret Service," 2014) stars as an informant who finds herself tugged between the two men. It's a grim story to be sure, but also one filled with plenty of hope — and also a warning about a possible future. "Fahr- enheit 451" is considered a clas- sic for a reason, and it's hitting the screen on Saturday, May 19, on HBO. Growing up: The Goldberg family is growing. ABC's popu- lar 1980s-set sitcom now has five seasons under its belt and a sixth on the way, and with an unnamed spinoff finally or- dered to series, it looks like the underlying humor in "The Goldbergs" isn't going any- where for a while. The new series, which is slated to premiere sometime in the 2018-19 TV season, will jump ahead a few years from its parent series and be set in the 1990s. The focus of the spi- noff will be squarely on the teachers at William Penn Academy. The pickup is actual- ly the spinoff 's second chance at life, after ABC went so far as to order a pilot over a year ago, only to decline a full series or- der on the show. Well, "Goldbergs" fans don't have to worry about that this time, with a full 13 episodes on order. Among the new cast is former "The Goldbergs" star AJ Michalka, who played Lain- ey for four seasons before leav- ing ahead of the fifth season. She'll be jumping right back into the same role, only now as a teacher at William Penn Academy. Recurring "Goldbergs" guest stars Tim Meadows and Bryan Callen will also reprise their roles, with Meadows now toplining as Principal Glascott and Callen as Coach Mellor. Despite their unique eccentric- ities and personal lives, all three characters are looked up to by their students. "The Goldbergs" spinoff has had a long and winding road to get to this point, but with a firm 13-episode commitment, it looks like it will finally see the light of day. Watch for the new series next season on ABC. Back for more: They say that all good things must come to an end, but that old idiom appar- ently doesn't apply to "NCIS." The CBS drama has been a mainstay at the network for a whopping 15 seasons, and with a recent 16th-season pickup, it seems that the venerable proce- dural still has lots of life in it. That's not the only good news for all the "NCIS" fans out there. Mark Harmon ("Chicago Hope"), who's headlined the cast since the very first season, has reportedly inked a new contract to stay on for the new season as well. "It's pretty simple — viewers everywhere love 'NCIS,'" CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl said in a statement an- nouncing the renewal. "This show speaks to viewers of all ages, in all parts of the country and around the world. 'NCIS's' amazing characters and terrific storytelling result in some of TV's most passionate fans." Passionate fans indeed! Itself a spinoff of "JAG," "NCIS" has spawned two of its own suc- cessful spinoffs — "NCIS: Los Angeles" and "NCIS: New Or- leans" — each with its own group of loyal viewers. Sadly for fans, there's at least one face that won't be on screen when the 16th season ar- rives. Pauley Perrette ("Almost Famous," 2000), who's starred alongside Harmon since the very beginning, has hung up her hat and moved on from the series. Despite that, the show must go on, as they say.
