6A – Daily News – Thursday, April 29, 2010 Pastimes Stand up at the State Theatre Live stand up comedy is coming to Red Bluff’s State Theatre, 333 Oak St., at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 8, hosted by Red Bluff’s own resident comedian Aaron Prinz. Stage-Left Entertainment will be presenting Jason Resler, who has been seen on Comedy Central and heard on XM Satellite Radio as the evening’s headliner. Resler has been called one of the nation’s top touring comedians by Entertainment Busi- ness Journal. The night includes Cheryl the Soccer Mom, who has been on Nick At Night’s Real Funny Moms, and Carlos Rodriguez, who is a regular at Punchline Comedy Club in both Sacramento and San Francisco. Rodriguez has starred in an independent film. Tickets for the event, which is intended for intellectually mature audiences only, will be $10 in advance or $12 at the door and can be purchased in advance at M&M Ranch House or Grocery Outlet in Red Bluff. About the performers: Jason Resler is a comedian and a writer and done a little bit of bad acting, but it was bad in a funny way, funny on purpose, according to his biography. He has performed improv onstage with Robin Williams. Cheryl the Soccer Mom's comedy is based on her expe- rience as a suburban soccer mom, but her act is not typical mom-humor. Cheryl has performed at some of the top com- edy clubs in the country. She is the founder of the Real Housewives of Rio Linda comedy tour and was a regional finalist on Nick-at-Nite's Search for the Funniest Mom in America. Jason Resler Carlos Rodriguez brings a clever, young and approach- able voice to the comedy scene. A Sacramento native, his observational humor touches beyond common daily occur- rences to deep-rooted memories of his childhood, his fami- ly relationships and the most offbeat subject matter meant to be kept private. Carlos is a natural performer and an expe- rienced entertainer on and off the stage. Aaron Prinz first took the comedy stage in the mid 2000s, establishing himself in local coffee shops in his home town of Red Bluff, before branching out to larger comedy clubs and casinos in Sacramento and the Bay Area. He brings a unique style to observational comedy that is sure to set him apart. Whether it’s about being raised in a small farm town, or questioning the everyday events that pass through our lives, Aaron Prinz is sure to provide a big city show, with that hometown feel making him an act that is too good to pass up. Cressy named Artist of the Month The Red Bluff Art Asso- ciation Artist of the Month is Bernice Cressy. “Bernice is relatively new to RBAA, but she immediately stepped in and embraced the concept of our organization and joined in our projects,” President Kathy Brehm said. “We are delighted to have her.” Born in Glendale, Cressy spent much of her childhood in Arizona due to asthma. When she married Edwin, she moved back to L.A. County. She and her husband moved to Red Bluff 10 years ago and four years later to Cottonwood. The Cressys came to like the area through some friends who had located here. Starting with watercolor, Cressy was soon intro- duced to colored pencil, which turned out to be her signature talent. Bernice Cressy sister claims she drew doll clothes for her paper dolls as a girl. She doesn't recall that. However, she remem- bers most that she loved to draw trees, branching out in all directions. She still loves trees. While she had an aunt who was an artist in Ari- zona, she didn’t have guid- ance in art until much later when she started doing ceramics in her 30s. The rest came after she came to Red Bluff. Cressy has taken some lessons with Sandi Palmer in Cottonwood. “I’ve always loved watercolors,” she said. “Through the years I have April 30 - May 1 & 2 bought a few paintings but never thought I would get into art myself.” Her Mentor, drawing her into the art world, is Debby Sipes, a friend and member of RBAA. After joining the group, Cressy’s interest grew. She has attended meetings and participated in the recent Rolling Hills Art and Wine event, enjoy- ing a little success. She is working on items for the Dairy Festival but she still feels she is in the learning stages. "We all continue to learn all the time," Brehm said.
