A s an out-of-state student, sophomore Hannah Jacobs '16 was looking for a second home during recruitment season. In Pi Chapter she found not only a great group of sisters, but a strong support network to help her realize her goals of being a teacher. "Gamma Phi has gotten me more involved in community service and helped me to become more of a leader," Hannah said. "I didn't feel pressured to be someone I wasn't, which was so relaxing." While she has had a strong background in volunteering, Hannah also credits Gamma Phi with helping her continue that on campus. Her Big in the house was in freshman leadership and encouraged her to get involved in that as well. "I can be kind of timid, so without that push I don't think I would've gone for it." She currently works in chapter recruitment on campus, which she has thoroughly enjoyed so far. Hannah is thankful to her sisters for their support, as well as alumnae such as Chapter Advisor Angie Miller '82. "She's only been with us a few months, but she's already made such a difference. Caitlin Drummy has also been super helpful and always has something positive to say." During her senior year of high school, Hannah volunteered in Haiti, which inspired her to be a more thankful person. "We would give out meals and hang out with the kids like we used to in Vacation Bible School," Gamma Phi Beta • University of Nebraska-Lincoln Spring 2018 Music to Our Ears House Corporation Outlines Upcoming Projects, Welcomes New Members S ince last fall, we have had several alumnae reach out to us regarding our piano refurbishment project. Full refurbishment of the piano may cost $10,000 or more, while the cost to purchase a used replacement would likely be between $8,000 and $10,000. While replacement is the more budget-friendly choice, we anticipate that some of our alumnae and current members may attach a great deal of sentimental value to the piano and prefer that we refurbish it. If you have any thoughts on refurbishment versus replacement, we welcome your feedback! Other projects on the horizon for Pi Chapter include: • A facelift for our front porch, pillars, and terrace. • Improving our windows. • Painting the second and third floors. • Updating some kitchen equipment. Our members began holding formal chapter meetings at the nearby (and newly built) Willa Cather Dining Center to accommodate our growing membership. The AHC has a few changing faces this year. We welcomed Angie Miller '82 as the new chapter advisor in January, and both Leslie Gibbens '85 and Emily Gross '02 will be joining AHC in April. After serving on the AHC for eight wonderful years, I will be handing my position over to Tracy Edgerton '88 in April. Serving our sorority in this way has been challenging and rewarding. Gamma Phi Beta provides us all an abundance of opportunity for growth, collaboration, and bonding with sisters from all generations. I made lasting friendships and gained infinitely more than given. I feel the utmost affection for the time I spent as a collegian in Gamma Phi Beta, and I continue to be sincerely grateful for the years serving as a member of AHC. I would encourage all of our Pi Chapter alumnae to consider how our sisterhood might benefit from your leadership.
