8A Daily News – Saturday, December 8, 2012 Religion Faith Church news Healing and worship service Everyone is invited to attend a community healing and worship service at the New Hope Church, 925 Walnut St. in Red Bluff on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.. The Rev. James Wilson of PrayNorthState and the Governor's Prayer Team will be conducting the service. An introduction and report will also be given on the National Day of Repentance which was held on Yom Kippur near the end of September, as well as the season it is morphing into as it enters its second year. The National Day of Repentance follows in the footsteps of Scripture itself in identifying repentance as an essential component to healing. The purpose of the National Day of Repentance is to educate the Body of Christ to the need for and the value of repentance at this time of our life together. The Rev. Jim Wilson, one of three national directors for NDR, said, "In repentance there are always things from which we turn away. But the Lord Himself reminds us that the One to Whom we turn is far more important than the that from which we turn away." And the vision is to be a light to the church in carrying out this purpose. For more information go to www.dayofrepentance.org. This will also be a time to introduce the California Governor's Prayer Team (CGPT), which has a vision to see and participate in the 4th Great Awakening spanning the length and breadth of California in which every member of the Body of Christ is an integral and Spirit-filled member of the Kingdom tapestry God is weaving. The mission is to pray, proclaim, and produce the fruits of a culture of repentance in California. It is a call to all so that the CGPT might serve as a catalyst for concerted prayer and ministry toward a Great Awakening in cooperation with other catalytic ministries. The team leadership will teach and train for this season of repentance (see www.dayofrepentance.org) leading to a 4th Great Awakening. A journey to Bethlehem &Worship An Advent for such a time as this For traditional denominations the four weeks leading up to Christmas form their own season. We call it Advent and the word means Beginning and – yes – Active Anticipation. Many Christians spend this season anticipating the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, but traditions associated with it pre-suppose the already-birth of the Savior. Advent is about the anticipated return of the King in glory. The readings from scripture that characterize this period down the centuries are those associated with the ministry of John the Baptist – Messiah's forerunner. So what is the unique role of John? He does three things in his ministry to the Lord. He treats Him like family; they are, after all, cousins after the flesh. We are told to greet and treat and serve Him as though He were our brother, and to treat our brothers as though they were He. John recognizes Him for Who He really is and immerses Him in the water of Baptism for repentance – because Jesus wants to be so honored – to fulfill all righteousness. In other words, John lets Jesus call the tune instead of insisting on doing it his way. And let's not forget when Jesus goes under John goes under with Him; that is how they did baptism in those days – and often enough in these days. He has his cousin's back and he has it in accordance with the cousin's will – two things we rarely do in tandem because we think, "If I have your back I get to call the shots." Finally, he sees – and says – that as Jesus increases he (John) must decrease. Spoken in English, John takes his own advice and repents, refocusing his own life on God as he recognizes God approaching in human flesh. He gets it that this is a process of practicing His methods rather than our progressive re-focus. There will be own. It means in the Awakening we bumps in the road and times of doubt choose the confidence to do the things for John, but the framework is set and He does – and greater things than these in His Name – because He he will stay within it. and we are family. In the United States It all adds up to what I told there have been three Great the woman who asked me Awakenings in our history. what I would tell the Church The first – in the 1730s and about getting ready. There will be story reading for children, craft construction and a few carols will be sung. Following the activities a light supper will be served. This is an event for all ages. Baynham, pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kan.: When this statement was made, it was under the old beliefs and practices of the children of God. They had not long been emancipated from Egypt. Standards were put in place to preserve quality of life and a new system to live by. Under these standards the people were to adhere to the principles of true and false witnesses against them. Preservation of life and the sanctity of the nation were paramount. Those who interfered with this system were judged and sent away. The coming of Jesus Christ brought a new revelation to the standard by which all believers would conduct themselves in the matter of relationship with one's neighbor. We are taught to forgive those who wrong us and to seek good will for all we come in contact. We are taught to treat people with the same respect we want for ourselves. The quality of character within us must have an effect on those around us, so that life is spent overcoming evil with good. If we retaliate because of those who have wronged us, then are we better than them? We can't measure ourselves only by what others do to us. We must mea- sure ourselves with principles that build humankind and not try to get even. LIBERATE INNER ANGER Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery: Many religions address revenge as well as the importance of forgiveness. On this topic His Holiness the Dalai Lama says, "Hatred will not cease by hatred, but by love alone. This is the ancient law." Forgiveness can be viewed as a spiritual practice and was taught by Jesus, Buddha and other great spiritual teachers. There are many misconceptions about forgiveness. Some mistakenly believe that by forgiving, you are condoning a grievous act or that justice will be abandoned. Or that forgiving implies you are weak and will not stand up against those who commit such acts. But forgiveness is not about helplessly giving up, avoiding justice or being weak. Forgiveness is about recognizing the wrong that you hold in your heart, realizing that the wrong can be healed, and working to understand how you came to hold your anger and resentment so that you do not let it happen again. This process helps you to develop compassion for yourself and others. Tehama County Church Directory HOYT-COLE CHAPEL OF THE FLOWERS 816 Walnut St. - Red Bluff FD 652 Red Bluff....
