Indiana sigma Chapter HousemotHer and Friend House Director Susan Jansen Finds a Big Family at Indiana Sigma S usan Jansen's husband, Robert (she calls him "Bo"), passed away when her daughter, Erin, was still in high school. But her daughter's path gave her strength, and she now has an enormous family through her work as a fraternity housing director. When Erin traveled to Bos- ton for college, Susan was by herself. However, she did not let that get her down. Rather, she followed Erin's lead, and left her home of Baldwin City for a new adventure, finding a position as a sorority housing director. "I liked college students, and I was used to having girls around," Susan said. No longer confined to Kansas, she looked at jobs across the na- tion. Her first sorority position took her to Columbus, Ohio. So not only was her new job a new experience, so was her new home. "During my first job as a sorority house di- rector, I got there with zero training, and I just had to figure it out," Susan said. "When asked by my friends about what I did at my job, I had to tell them 'I don't know' for the longest time." While working at the sorority, Susan had wondered if she should try a fraternity in- stead. "When the opportunity presented it- self, I decided to scratch that itch and take it," she said. That is what brought her to Terre Haute and the men of Indiana Sigma. "I wouldn't say any day is typical," Susan said of her current job at Indiana Sigma. "You have a big house with lots of people living in it, and you don't know what is go- ing to happen." She likens her housing di- rector work to that of a property manager: While there are some quiet days, other days involve pipe leaks, broken air condition- ing, brothers locked out of their bedrooms, and other maintenance issues. "I make sure the house is safe, com- fortable, and in good repair." New to Indiana, Susan is still getting to know the area and everyone in it. But so far she is a big fan of her residents. "I have a great group of re- sponsible guys here," she said of the brothers, "and they do a good job of taking care of the house already." When not working at the fraternity house, Susan enjoys the quiet apartment life, sew- ing and playing the violin, a very personal hobby only done in the privacy of her resi- dence. Her daughter, Erin (now 24), works for Ohio Humanities in Columbus and in- tends to pursue grad school. Susan considers herself a laid back, "every- body's mom" type of director, and so far it works for the job. "The guys have been very accepting of me," she said of her relationship with the Chap- ter. "It is a fine line between being their friend and an authority figure. I think I do that well." You Can Make an Impact on Indiana Sigma Join the Alumni Advisory Board Today I am pleased to extend an opportunity for you contribute in a meaningful way to the Indiana Sigma Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsi- lon by becoming a member of the Chapter's Alumni Advisory Board. I'm asking for an investment, not of money, but of your time that will pay dividends in the development of the True Gentlemen that make up your Chap- ter. The Alumni Advisory Board members are the key alumni volunteers responsible for providing leadership, guidance, and support to the collegiate Chapter, ensuring the Chap- ter's strong health, and continued growth. The Alumni Advisory Boards and its member training are organized around the 12 core ar- eas of Chapter operations: • Chapter Management • Recruitment • Member Education • Leadership • Ritual • Scholarship • Service/Philanthropy • Health and Safety • University/Campus Relations • Alumni Relations • Housing • Financial Management There is no set number of members on an Alumni Advisory Board and you do not need to live in Terre Haute or the surrounding area. With today's technology, all you need is a desire to have a positive impact on a group poised to grow and do great things on the In- diana State University's campus and in the Terre Haute community. By volunteering on an Alumni Advisory Board, you will help enrich the lives of the Chapter members and make the Chapter stronger. Please contact us if you would be willing to serve on the Indiana Sigma Chap- ter Alumni Advisory Board. We look forward to hearing from you!
