May 6 - 12, 2018 WHATS UP! T7 BY ANDREW WARREN TV Media W hat's something sweet, delicious and oh so enter- taining? Why, it's Monday nights on Food Net- work, of course! The first weeknight is all about baking on the culinary channel, and things get even sweeter with yet another baking show added to the mix starting Monday, May 7. That night sees "Best Baker in America" return for a second season with a new host, new bakers and new recipes over which the contestants must prove their mastery. Regular "Chopped" judge Scott Conant takes over host- ing duties from last season's Adam Rapoport (editor of Bon Appétit magazine) this time around, lending his typically knowledgeable and witty ob- servations to the tasks set be- fore the bakers. He's joined by returning judges Jason Smith and Marcela Valladolid, both of whom certainly know their way around a kitchen full of sweets. Unlike similar baking compe- titions, such as British import "The Great British Baking Show," "Best Baker in America" isn't out to find the best amateur baker. This show is looking for the best professional from among its contestants, and be- cause of that, this series has no qualms about throwing some re- ally tricky tasks at the group. With nine contestants this time around, the judges have come up with some challenges that will really test their inven- tiveness and baking expertise. There are old school favorites, such as decadent Mont Blanc and sumptuous charlotte royale, to be baked, along with tricky treats that really test the bakers' techniques and attention to de- tail, such as petits fours and lay- ered French meringue cakes.
