April 29 - May 5, 2018 WHATS UP! T5 BY ANDREW WARREN TV Media Athletic elegance: The ele- gance. The poise. The perfectly timed steps, swoops and move- ments. Watching a pair of skilled dancers can be like watching the creation of a piece of art. That's a big part of what makes ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" such a not-so-guilty pleasure to watch. Of course, another big part is the celebrities who get paired up with the pros, even if some of the famous faces seen to have two left feet. This season of "Dancing with the Stars" premieres Sunday, April 30, on ABC, with a very special collection of celebrities: they're all athletes. There's nary a movie star, sitcom actor or rock musician in sight — just a collection of accomplished sports stars. Whether their ath- letic abilities translate to the dance floor remains to be seen. As for the hosts and judges, this season's panel should look awfully familiar: it's the same group as last season. Tom Bergeron ("America's Funniest Home Videos") and sportscast- er Erin Andrews return to host the competition, with dance ex- perts Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli passing judgment. But of course, it's the celebri- ties that everyone is most inter- ested in, and this season's ath- letes include two of America's biggest stars at this year's Py- eongchang Olympics. Figure skater Adam Rippon and snow- boarder Jamie Anderson are both competing, along with a somewhat more controversial former Olympian: Tonya Hard- ing, who was the subject of last year's Oscar-winning film "I, Tonya." Professional athletes and pro- fessional dancers coming to- gether: it's an elegant match made in heaven, and it's all in this season of "Dancing with the Stars," premiering Sunday, April 30, on ABC. A new suit: Ladies and gen- tlemen, it's a go. The long-ru- mored and long-anticipated "Suits" spinoff has finally been given the green light, and one of that long-running drama's most popular characters is finally get- ting her own show. "Suits" star Gina Torres ("Firefly") has been with the se- ries since the very beginning, but for the most recent season — the seventh, which had its fi- nale last week — she took a step back and only appeared in a few episodes. The two-part season finale, which also served as a send-off for departing stars Meghan Markle ("Horrible Bosses," 2011) and Patrick J. Ad- ams ("Old School," 2003), played double duty as a backdoor pilot for Torres's spinoff, setting things up for the as-yet-un- named series. The new show, which has been in development since 2017, will see Torres stepping back into the shoes of high-powered lawyer Jessica Pearson. Though she left the New York law firm that bears her name in season 6, Pearson has continued her ca- reer in Chicago, and the new se- ries will focus on her adjustment to the world of dirty politics in the Windy City. "Gina's portrayal of Jessica Pearson as one of television's strongest, most successful busi- nesswomen has made a huge im- pact with fans," said Chris Mc- Cumber, president of entertain- ment networks for NBCUniver- sal Cable Entertainment. "We can't wait to explore this next chapter in the 'Suits' legacy — and a brand-new world for Jessi- ca." Details of the spinoff are scarce so far, with no additional casting announcements or even a premiere date yet announced. One thing that is certain, though, is that the new series should come with a built-in audience, with both "Suits" and the char- acter of Jessica Pearson being extremely popular. Lights (not) out: NBC is keeping things supernatural. The peacock network has or- dered a second season of last summer's hit, "Midnight, Texas," the vampire drama that took a hefty bite out of the competition. The series is based on the books of the same name by au- thor Charlaine Harris, who also wrote the series on which HBO's "True Blood" is based. No pre- miere date has been announced yet for the new season, but what has been revealed is that the se- ries will have a pair of new showrunners. Nicole Snyder and Eric Charmelo, both of whom were consulting produc- ers on the first season, have been promoted, replacing outgoing first-season showrunner Moni- ca Owusu-Breen. "Midnight, Texas" stars Fran- çois Arnaud ("Blindspot") as psychic Manfred Bernardo, who moves to the town of Midnight at the urging of his grandmoth- er's ghost. He finds the town filled with out-of-this-world characters, including a witch, a fallen angel and a vampire. Dylan Bruce ("Orphan Black"), Parisa Fitz-Henley ("Jessica Jones"), Arielle Kebbel ("Ballers"), Jason Lewis ("Sex and the City") and Peter Mensah ("Sleepy Hollow") also star. The supernatural drama ranked as the top broadcast dra- ma last summer, beating out the third season of CBS's "Zoo" and the fourth season of NBC's own "The Night Shift." Both of those series have since been canceled, leaving this summer's competi- tion for top drama wide open — although with no release date yet announced, it's still un- known if "Midnight, Texas" will even be competing.
